The Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs and University Curriculum is responsible for managing several programs that operate across The New Schools colleges, and for serving as the Provosts Offices primary liaison to the colleges point people in Academic Affairs. Although the portfolio is largely focused on undergraduate education, it also encompasses work with graduate students and graduate programs as detailed below.
The Assistant Provost reports to the Vice Provost for Curriculum and Learning and, depending on the project, works closely with other members of the Provosts Office Senior Staff. The position requires both anticipating and responding to internal or external issues that may impact the programs, especially with regard to their university-wide implementation. Collaborative problem-solving is an integral part of the role.
Roles and Responsibilities:
In the area of Academic Affairs, the Assistant Provost works closely with the universitys colleges, faculty, and administrative offices to oversee, implement, manage, and revise processes related to academic offerings, with particular emphasis on those that impact more than one college. S/he is also responsible for directly communicating to various levels within the university (including Senior Staff, Academic Leadership Committee and other university committees as needed) to respond to and clarify project status.
Chair the University Academic Affairs Committee, consisting of members from every college deans office, which meets at least monthly year-round. This group is charged with ensuring continuous and effective communications between the college deans offices, the Provosts Office, the Registrars Office, and other central university teams;
Work with senior leadership in central offices and in the colleges, leading collaborative, ongoing processes of reviewing university academic planning and related procedures within and across units (e.g., curriculum planning, cross-listing, etc.).
Foster communications, facilitate implementation and troubleshoot problems in academic planning and practices across all levels of the university.
As appropriate, remand matters that arise from the Academic Affairs Group to other Provost Office committees (e.g., Academic Policy Group, Academic Planning Group, Faculty Affairs Group).
In the area of University Curriculum, the Assistant Provost leads the development, implementation, and web presentation of new and ongoing university-wide programs in collaboration with colleges and central offices, as described below:
ULEC: Oversee and participate in the development, implementation, and refinement of University Liberal Arts (ULEC) courses to ensure a diverse yet coherent curriculum that addresses required General Education learning outcomes. ULEC responsibilities include: selecting the programs courses, exploring pedagogical options, supervising faculty leading the courses, and ensuring that these courses address shared learning outcomes as appropriate, as well as overseeing the budget and developing appropriate procedures for the ULEC program.
Shared Capacities: Lead the University's General Education program, Shared Capacities, Co-Chairing the Shared Capacities Advisory Committee, and ensuring communication of and compliance with all requirements. Immediate goals for the 2019-20 academic year include: collaborating with colleges and other offices as appropriate to identify or develop Shared Capacities course offerings for AAS students as well as higher-level course options for transfer students; partnering with Marketing and Communications, Admissions, and other offices to ensure accurate and effective communication of Shared Capacities; collaborating with the universitys Accreditation and Institutional Effectiveness team to ensure ongoing and sustainable assessment of the Shared Capacities program
Undergraduate Minors: Provide leadership in the development, review, implementation, strategic vision and operational improvement of undergraduate minors.
Dual-Degree Programs: Provide leadership in the development, review, implementation, strategic vision and operational improvement of dual-degree programs.
Academic Orientation: Provide strategic leadership for Academic Orientation activities, which are managed by the Assistant Director of Academic Affairs and University Curriculum, coordinating as needed with the offices of Admissions and Student Success as well as with undergraduate programs in an ongoing process of development, review, and improvement.
TA/TF/RA. Provides academic leadership, supervises Assistant Directors coordination with Human Resources, and supports point people in each college on the hiring process for Teaching Assistants, Teaching Fellows, and stipended Research Assistants across the university.
