Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in institutional planning, public administration, engineering, architecture, business administration, economics, industrial technology or a related discipline and two years of facility and space planning experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. For this Intern position, candidate needs to be currently enrolled in an accredit Architect program. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License/Certification Required

Ability to operate university-owned vehicles with a valid driver's license.

Essential Job Functions

The work of this position interacts with Planning Design and Construction, Facilities Operations departments, the University community, State officials, General Contractors, Construction Managers and others who are retained by the University to design and construct Facilities Operations Projects. Communication with senior university leadership, including Deans and Vice Chancellors, is required for adequate planning, programming and completion of the design and construction activities. The work of this position requires that the individual facilitate development of a project scope that meets the budget and user needs; Present project updates through verbal communication; Development of construction drawings; Coordinate with on campus staff for complete and timely integration of utilities, shut downs, miscellaneous other related work; Build and maintain long term partnerships and relationships that foster teamwork; Adapt communications as appropriate for specific audiences; mediates conflict resolution in a professional manner and in the best interest of the University.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of state building codes, safety orders, rules, laws, regulations, departmental policies and procedures, governing the design of minor facilities construction or renovation projects.

  • Basic knowledge of effective design work in preparation of cost estimates for plans and specifications.

  • Basic knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and other engineering applications, software and hardware in order to provide accurate design work in preparation of preliminary drawings and plans.

  • Understanding of the principles of the facilities work order management and shop loading to maximize effectiveness and productivity of maintenance shops.

  • IT skills including databases, spread sheets, and electronic file management.

  • Ability to read blue prints and or construction drawings/renderings.

  • Good understanding of building and maintenance methods for institutional scale facilities.

  • Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in building, mechanical and electrical maintenance repair and construction activities.

  • Good knowledge of the agency's and facility's policies, practices and standards relating to the maintenance program.

  • Basic knowledge of appropriate plumbing and electrical code regulations, fire and safety codes, regulations and standards.

  • Knowledge and ability to develop project budgets and work within budgetary guidelines.

  • Verbal and written communication skills required. Some negotiation skills. Ability to work alone or in a team environment. Ability to maintain a professional working relationship with co-workers, clients, contractors, and others as required. Attention to detail is required.

  • Ability to operate university-owned vehicles with a valid driver's license.

Work Schedule/Hours

Part time with primary schedule of Monday thru Thursday, 7:00 am-4:00 pm.

Other hours may be needed in order to complete job deadlines / responsibilities.

Number of Hours Per Week 20-30 Number of Months Per Year 11 Mandatory Staff No Physical Demands of Position

Duties may include physically strenuous activities such as climbing ladders, bending and stooping, twisting and bending to inspect construction work.

Hiring Range $17.00

Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
