Life 97.3, KDNW, a Northwestern Media station near the beautiful shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, MN, exists to reach listeners with the message of God's compelling love and hope. As Assistant Program Director / On-Air Host you would fill the vital role of helping shape the on-air content of Life 97.3 and impact our listening audience with an engaging music show.

What will I do in this position?

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

ASSISTANT PROGRAM DIRECTOR (50%)

  • Help Lead and develop on air team by assisting Program Director with coaching sessions for all air talent; attend staff air-checks sessions as needed; provide regular ongoing feedback, encouragement, and affirmation of on-air staff; communicate regularly with coach and Program Director on direction for coaching the on-air team.

  • Assist in overseeing audio production and creation of station imaging as directed by Program Director.

  • Help lead the scripting team for production elements working with scripting team on all production elements and obtaining final approval from PD on scripts.

  • Assistant with maintaining weekly EAS logging and testing as well as staff training.

  • Work with PD to ensure FCC Compliance, maintaining Online Public File (OLPF) for all KDNW stations.

  • Assist with the review and approval of business underwriting copy for non-commercial sound, perception, and FCC Compliance.

  • Learn Zetta Clocks & Logs to assist PD with programming duties as needed.

  • Assist with coverage during staff absences & voice track scheduling.

  • Write liners weekly with Engagement Director and distribute to staff.

  • Work closely with PD to audition selections of on-air music possibilities and assist with weekly music selection.

  • Learn GSelector to schedule music for the network with efficiency and excellence.

  • Assist with Day Sponsor production.

ON-AIR (50%)

  • Host air shifts as directed which includes show prep (gathering relevant topics/stories) for air shifts.

  • Regularly engage with listeners via social media sites.

  • Represent station at live events as assigned.

  • Serve as back-up for other air shifts as needed.

Secondary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with fundraiser activities as requested.

  • Attend industry related events and pursue additional development opportunities.

  • Represent KDNW at churches, concerts and organizations as requested.

  • Schedule and interview artists/listeners/other guests; editing/producing related audio as needed.

  • Assist with or host podcasts as assigned.

  • Assist with miscellaneous departmental duties as requested.

What will it take to succeed in this position?

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Previous broadcasting, public speaking, or related experience required

  • Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern's mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, kind, and tactful manner

  • Ability to plan and execute an entertaining air shift incorporating production elements and promos

  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule and host and/or attend station events as requested

  • Ability to work in both a team environment and independently, without close supervision

  • Creative, self-starter with ability to work in an organized fashion

  • Ability to complete projects accurately within predetermined deadlines

  • Knowledge and understanding of legal and technical aspects of broadcasting

  • Excellent public speaking skills with ability to effectively communicate spiritual truths

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively communicate spiritual truths

  • Basic to intermediate computer proficiency

  • Ability to secure and maintain a current driver's license

  • Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
