ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

USF College of Public Health was founded in 1984 as the first college of public health in Florida and consists of a multidisciplinary faculty of 84 scholars, professionals and leaders serving the educational needs of more than 4,500 students in bachelors, master's and doctoral degree programs.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of the USF Genomics Program will provide day-to-day direction and supervision, as well as provide input into the incumbent's annual assignment and evaluation. As a ranked professorial faculty member at USF, the incumbent will have teaching, research/scholarship and service responsibilities. In addition, the incumbent will serve as the USF Genomics Program Sequencing Core Laboratory Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

INSTRUCTIONAL DUTIES: 15% FTE

  • Advise or co-advise graduate students and serve on masters- and doctoral-level student program and dissertation committees.

  • Mentor students, post docs, staff and researchers in laboratory methods applied to genomics research.

  • Serve as primary instructor for Genomics workshop training.

  • Coordinate Genomics symposium/meetings and training activities to promote genomics research at USF.

RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP DUTIES: 75% FTE

  • Support extramural funding for research activities that covers a minimum of 25% of annual salary through consulting services or committed time on individual research grants.

  • Responsible for the Sequencing Core instrumentation and service planning to include creating and overseeing Core EBA Plans to develop diverse types of sequencing services; and, optimizing reagents and protocols for applications such as RNA-Seq, Single cell analysis, Metagenomic sequencing, etc.

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Sequencing Core to include, but not limited to, the development of state-of-the art standard operating procedures and core service policies; regular updating of fee schedules; oversight of finances to ensure a positive balance; coordination sequencing schedules; iLab management and required reporting; instrument maintenance/service contract renewals; marketing of services; and, staying abreast of the latest technology by working closely with Illumina, 10X Genomics and other biotech companies.

  • Responsible for coordinating the Sequencing Core service activities with the Bioinformatics Computational Core service activities to ensure that the overall needs of the USF Genomics Program members are met.

CON'T

  • Manage outcomes of the Sequencing Core (e.g., grants awarded, papers published) for preparation of reports on USF Genomics Program return on investment.

  • Contribute to the scholarly literature through publication in peer-reviewed journals of at least national dissemination.

  • Communicate scientific discoveries via national and international scientific meetings.

  • Interface with USF PIs and researchers providing consultation on grant proposals, letters of support, NGS project experimental design, sequencing method development and cost estimates.

  • Support PIs and researchers on grant proposal and manuscript preparation, developing and evaluating new experimental techniques/methods; pilot protocol test and data analysis; and participating in the development of novel processes and procedures as needed.

  • Participate in meetings and other activities of the USF Genomics Program.

SERVICE DUTIES: 10% FTE

  • Participate in activities of USF centers, institutes, and other organizations to promote genomics research at USF and Tampa Bay community.

  • Participate at the national and state level in professional organizations and activities.

  • Contribute to the community through service related to professional and other expertise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

  • Ability to teach and mentor students in a laboratory and classroom environment.

  • Ability to manage sequencing core laboratory including supervising research staff.

  • Ability to support extramural funding for research activities.

  • Ability to interface with researchers from across the USF System to support research of the USF Genomics Program and the USF Genomics Cores.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

  • PhD or MD in a relevant scientific field and 5+ years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory.

  • At least three years of genomics research experience with next generation sequencing applications for DNA/RNA, including use of Illumina Miseq and Nextseq 2000 sequencing systems .

  • Experience developing and using Transposon Directed Insertion Sequencing research methods, such as quantitative insertion site sequencing.

  • Record of peer-reviewed publications applying NGS methods.

  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the expectation of contributions in genomics research, teaching/training and core service management.

PREFERRED:

  • Prior experience working in areas such as microbial genomics, single cell sequencing, long read and/or phased read technologies or RNA-seq applications are a strong plus.

  • Six or more years of genomics research experience with NGS applications.

  • Experience in scientific laboratory management, especially genomics core laboratories.

  • Experienced with a variety of molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and detection.

  • Familiarity with NGS software tools, bioinformatics pipelines and NGS data processing workflows, and interpretation of data Desired Skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, display excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills, and demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with and mentor others.
