Other Conditions: One (1) temporary, part-time, non-tenure track, 30% FTE position to begin approximately July 2024, pending position clearance. Renewal dependent upon performance and availability of funds. Funding sources to include extramural grant funding as well as Institutional funds.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in HICFA's clinical research efforts as a research physician, including participation in organized multi-center clinical trials from NIH and/or pharmaceutical companies of new potentially effective drugs for HIV or COVID-19. Reads and demonstrates understanding of protocol and informed consent documents. Helps to communicate the study to community physicians and ancillary medical personnel. Assists with the regulatory and administrative needs of opening the study, participates in study start up meetings, supervises the conduct of study procedures, and assists in obtaining participant informed consent. Evaluates participants clinically during study visits for adverse events. Helps to determine the severity grade of such adverse events and assists in documenting and reporting of adverse events.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of locally conceived studies of clinical and translational research in topics of interest to the Hawaii Center for AIDS (HICFA), particularly in HIV. Writes and submits pilot local study protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and implements such studies with the help of HICFA clinical staff. Supervises clinical study data entry.

  • Collaborates closely with HICFA and other JABSOM/UH laboratory researchers with the intent of generating important preliminary data for grant applications to NIH and other funding agencies.

  • Participates in didactic HIV medical care training for medical students and residents.

  • Participates in one-to-one mentoring of students, residents and graduate students. Serves as role model and supervises medical students, residents and pre-doctoral students in their research projects.

  • Participates in peer review of manuscripts for reputable journals.

  • Participates actively in all HICFA staff and research meetings.

  • Presents his/her own work-in-progress at research meetings.

  • In collaboration with local partners, works towards improvement in local HIV prevention efforts and towards enhancing the medical care of HIV infected individuals in the State of Hawaii.

  • Helps to establish, advocate for, and participates in collaborative HIV research nationally as well as internationally with an emphasis on research in the Pacific Rim and SE Asia.

  • Serves on Departmental, JABSOM or University committees as requested.

  • Other scholarly activities as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from a medical school of recognized standing.

  • Valid Hawaii medical license by date of hire.

  • Board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine

  • Demonstrated ability in teaching medical students, residents and pre-doctoral students

  • Experience in providing HIV patient care in the clinical learning environment.

  • Practical experience in the conduct of clinical research.

  • Evidence of effective research and scholarly activity with publications in peer- reviewed journals.

  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Board certification in the sub-specialty of Infectious Diseases

  • Familiarity with clinical research in HIV and/or COVID-19 disease

  • Cultural familiarity with Hawaii and its population

  • Familiarity and experience working within the medical system in Hawaii
