Position Summary

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences (https://cropsoil.uga.edu/) at UGA is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to develop an Extension and Research program in the area of agronomy for corn, soybean, and small grain production. This position is a 9-month academic year (75% Extension, 20% Research, and 5% Service) Tenure Track appointment with a guarantee of two months of summer salary. The position will be located on the UGA Tifton Campus. The successful candidate will coordinate a contemporary program in agronomic management of field corn, soybean, grain sorghum, small grain (wheat, barley, oats, rye), and other minor acreage grain crops (sunflower, canola, sesame, etc.) production focused on the development and delivery of timely educational programs to various clientele including county Extension agents, growers, and industry representatives. The successful candidate will also maintain an applied research and Extension program supported through extramural funding, publish research findings in appropriate peer-reviewed journals, popular press, and participate in graduate student education.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Working knowledge of applied agronomic principles, including soil fertility, crop physiology, and harvest management.

  • Knowledge of pesticide registrations for grain crops.

  • Candidate should be knowledgeable of pesticide modes of action, weed, insect and pathogen management, and the mechanisms of resistance prevention and development.

  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to function independently and with commodity-oriented teams of extension and research scientists.

  • Competent computer skills related to data analyses and information delivery technologies.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide team leadership for multidisciplinary UGA Field Corn, Soybean, and Small Grain Teams for development of educational programs appropriate to field corn, soybean and small grain establishment, agronomics, pest management and utilization.

  • Provide assistance to county Extension agents through demonstrations, in-service-trainings, meetings, county visits, remote and on-site trouble-shooting and telephone consultations.

  • Develop and fund field-oriented applied field corn, soybean and small grain demonstration programs, and applied research programs necessary to resolve basic issues facing grain crop producers in Georgia.

  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with agri-business, commodity and livestock associations, personnel with the USDA-ARS, and government agency representatives.
