Assistant Professor - Family Nurse Practitioner Master of Science

Bradford School of Health Sciences, Capito Department of Nursing

Position Summary:

Family Nurse Practitioner faculty members teach in the university's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program for the university and are required to attend on-campus residencies yearly. The faculty member will teach theory and clinical courses and assist in the preparation of students for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement. This faculty member will assist with clinical placements. This position will require the faculty to attend on-campus residencies in Charleston.

The faculty member will be responsible for teaching the didactic/theory and clinical Family Nurse Practitioner nursing courses.

Essential Responsibilities:

Be able and willing to commit and adhere to the policies of the University of Charleston, Bert Bradford School of Health Science, and the Capito Department of Nursing, but not limited to the following:

  • Teach in the Family Nurse Practitioner program.

  • Maintain a minimum of 5 office hours per week (online) for advising in addition to on-campus office hours as mandated by the Program Director of Graduate Nursing. The designated office hours must be consistent from week to week, and any foreseen variations must be reported/approved by the Graduate Nursing Program Director.

  • Display required office hours online, signature block, and correspondence for students/advisees. A copy of office hours must be forwarded to the department of nursing administrative assistants and the Graduate Nursing Program Director of nursing upon the start of each semester.

  • Assist with procurement of clinical sites and maintain open communication with clinical affiliates regarding student placement, program updates, and accreditation actions as needed.

  • Develop and implement strategies to secure preceptors and maintain an updated preceptor database.

  • Collaborate to obtain Clinical Contracts to maintain compliance in solidifying affiliation agreements with clinical sites.

  • Communicate with students regarding clinical changes and/or clinical geographical and state requests.

  • Orient students to University of Charleston compliance standards and processes.

  • Update and maintain accurate student records, correspondence, and evaluations in shared databases.

  • Forecast, maintain, and post clinical placement rosters in established shared network.

  • Ensure clinical preceptors and lab supervisors are provided with appropriate university access to maintain clinical faculty qualifications on file.

  • Collaborate with program faculty to ensure smooth clinical placement processes for students.

  • Attend functions and meetings as required by the University of Charleston, Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences, and the Capito Department of Nursing.

  • Serve on committees as assigned.

  • Provide instructional and/or non-instructional services as a member of the nursing team specified by the faculty member's contract.

  • Actively participate in the development, evaluation, and review of curriculum, services, and activities of the nursing program.

  • Actively participate in the self-study and accreditation process for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and maintain yearly supportive documentation data in addressing standards and criteria.

  • Instruct courses in a professional and ethical manner consistent with the University of Charleston and the Capito Department of Nursing.

  • Utilize resources consistent with the University of Charleston, Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences, and the Capito Department of Nursing as appropriate to enhance learning.

  • Communicate with students, faculty, staff, clinical agencies, and the community in a professional and ethical manner.

  • Commit to life-long learning and maintain current competency in subject matter and service or clinical area.

  • Participate in scholarly activities including but not limited to professional development and conferences including submitting an abstract proposal for presentation to a national or international conference annually.

  • Assume responsibility and accountability for instruction, evaluation of students, planning and implementing curriculum content in the didactic and/or clinical area.

  • Establish effective working relationships with personnel from community healthcare agencies.

  • Assist the students in the identification and understanding of The University of Charleston, Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences, and the Capito Department of Graduate Nursing policies and procedures pertaining to the student, including, but not limited to:

  • Mission and Philosophy

  • Outcomes

  • Student responsibilities and accountability to the University, program, clinical facilities, patients, and accrediting bodies.

  • Learning experiences

  • Curriculum, instruction, and evaluation throughout the program.

  • Maintain a student advising load as determined by the Dean of Health Sciences and/or Graduate Nursing Program Director. Advising files are to be kept current from semester to semester, and documentation of student contacts/communications are to be placed in the advising file for ongoing evaluation.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

In accordance with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards and criteria for graduate nursing programs and specifically FNP programs, individuals teaching nursing courses in the MSN FNP program must have a bachelor's degree with a major in nursing, have a graduate degree with a major in nursing; and have a doctoral degree in nursing with either the masters level or the doctoral level degrees including an FNP degree focus; hold National Board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner; and have evidence of current experience in nursing practice and education sufficient to demonstrate professional competence. Previous teaching experience including proficiency in curriculum development, supervision, instruction, assessment, evaluation and advising in a professional nursing program is preferred.

Specific requirements are exhibited as the following:

  • MSN required plus a doctorate in nursing and 5 years of direct patient care experience.

  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience in a nursing program preferred.

  • Recent clinical experience required (2 years in the past 10 years) as a Family Nursing Practitioner.

  • National Board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

  • Unencumbered state license and ability to obtain an unencumbered WV RN and CRNP as well as other state licenses per the program's needs.

  • Maintain current FNP and RN licensure and certifications.
