Alfred University's Performing Arts Division Music Department seeks an active and charismatic educator for a tenure track faculty position to begin the Fall 2024 academic year as an Assistant Professor. Candidates with a broad background in music and/or sound studies are encouraged to apply. The annual salary for this position will be $54,00-$60,000, depending on experience.

We are searching for applicants that have an interest in working in an interdisciplinary manner and enjoy the process of creating in new and different ways.

The successful candidate will combine traditional academic training and experiences with a breadth of knowledge of contemporary musical practice. The candidate will be instrumental in helping to reshape and contemporize the music program and collaborate within the Performing Arts Division and greater campus to ensure its success.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have a terminal degree (ABD considered) in ethnomusicology, musicology, or performance. The successful candidate will have an active record of research projects at the national level and growing recognition in the field; three years teaching experience or equivalent is preferred; demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching diverse populations, knowledge of the current higher education music landscape, demonstrated success with new ideas and ways of making, administrative experience in an academic or arts organization and experience with inter/transdisciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with divisional & school service including, but not limited to, recruitment, advising students, and other administrative duties expected from faculty.

  • Commit to the university's goals of mentorship, inclusion, and intersections.

  • Serve as a model of professionalism and act as a resource for students within the teaching-learning environment.

  • Teach 24 credit hours per academic year working with undergraduate students.

  • Depending on expertise, the candidate may teach and develop a broad range of contemporary music courses on topics including songwriting, audio production, pop music, broad areas of music history and world music, music theory, music for film/tv, music media, game audio, among others. As part of the teaching load, faculty support a rotation of ensembles including but not limited to popular music, jazz, concert band, choral, or new ensembles as the curriculum transforms. They will also support a rotation of core music courses such as music theory and music history.

  • Take a leading role in developing a contemporary music program.

  • Model the university mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituencies, flexibility, respectful collaboration, and active support of the Performing Arts Division.

  • Engage in research activities to support promotion and tenure.
