ASSISTANT PROFESSOR- SOIL CARBON SCIENTIST/MODELER

AS PART OF BIOECONOMY, CLIMATE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY FACULTY CLUSTER HIRE

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY is initiating a faculty cluster in the Bioeconomy, Climate and Renewable Energy. The cluster will enhance SUNY ESF's leadership role in addressing these topics at state, national and international levels. We are hiring five tenure-track positions in two departments: (1) Chemical/Bioresource/Agricultural Engineering in Dept. of Chemical Engineering - (https://www.esf.edu/pbe/), and (2) Natural Resource Economics, (3) Landscape Modeling, (4) Soil Carbon Scientist/Modeler (5) Carbon in the Built Environment, in the Department of Sustainable Resources Management (http://www.esf.edu/fnrm). The successful candidates for these positions are expected to participate actively and sustainably in this interdisciplinary Bioeconomy Cluster initiative, with participation in this Cluster included as an important criterion in performance evaluations.

The bioeconomy is central to the US and global economy's shift from a reliance on fossil fuels to an economy where biological resources and processes are the foundational component and mechanism of solutions to address multiple grand challenges including climate change, food security, energy independence and environmental sustainability. The bioeconomy also is an essential component of New York state's plans to aggressively reduce GHG emissions across its economy as mandated by the state's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019 (CLCPA). SUNY ESF recently launched two new institutes focused on solving challenges in this space.

The Climate and Applied Forest Research Institute (CAFRI) is a transdisciplinary team of forest, energy and climate experts who provide policymakers and the public with science-based and practical solutions to address climate change. The Bioeconomy Research Development Institute (BRDI) focuses on systems analysis and support of bioeconomy development initiatives. Faculty involved in these institutes and other related bioeconomy research are working closely with New York State (NYS) agencies on the development of the plans to implement the CLCPA as well as collaborating with faculty at other universities, research institutions, national labs and companies.

Soil Carbon Scientist/Modeler (Dept. of Sustainable Resources Management). Research focused on soil carbon storage and cycling across the landscape including forest and/or agricultural soils, including measurement and verification of the impact of management activities on soil carbon sequestration and storage. Teaching responsibilities include (1) a new campus wide undergraduate class Introduction to Climate Change, (2) forest or ecosystem above and below ground carbon measurement, and (3) accounting and spatial distribution of soil carbon.

  • PhD in soil science, forestry, natural resources or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Track record of publications in high-impact journals and successful grant writing.

  • Demonstrated capability as a teacher and mentor of both undergraduates and graduate students.

  • Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in research, teaching and service activities.

Location: With a total enrollment of about 2,200 undergraduates and 400 graduate students, combined with the immediate proximity of Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University, ESF provides an intimate, small-college atmosphere within a vibrant, large-university setting. ESF's extended campuses include more than 25,000 acres of forest properties, both close to Syracuse and across the Adirondack Park, that provide numerous opportunities for experiential coursework, research, and public outreach.

The college is located in Syracuse, New York, a dynamic and diverse community with plentiful natural, cultural, and civic opportunities. Located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes, Syracuse is within a five-hour drive of New York City, Toronto, and the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Mountains. SUNY-ESF is one of eight colleges and universities located in Onondaga County. The Syracuse University campus is immediately adjacent to SUNY-ESF, and SUNY Upstate Medical University is located within easy walking distance.

The SUNY-ESF campus provides a rich array of curricular and co-curricular experiences with our main Syracuse campus just southeast of downtown Syracuse and our regional campuses stretching from southern Onondaga County to the Adirondacks. The Syracuse area, home to our main campus, is home to many cultural events, museums, state and local parks and numerous festivals throughout the year along with a growing downtown in the city of Syracuse. Onondaga County provides a variety of neighborhoods that include urban, rural and suburban with strong schools, affordable housing and supportive communities.

Central New York is also home to numerous hospitals and medical facilities including SUNY Upstate Medical University, the St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, the VA Hospital of Syracuse and Crouse Hospital, each of which provide unique specialty areas that support the needs of the community.
