The Assistant Professor of Reading is a full-time non-tenured faculty position requiring a strong educational background specifically in more than one area of reading. The Assistant Professor of Reading shall have the primary responsibility of supporting the Department of Education and Social Sciences in maximizing its operating performance while achieving institutional goals. The Assistant Professor of Reading requires experience in the field with the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses both face-to-face and online. Faculty must develop and utilize a syllabus for each course, following established institutional guidelines. This key position shall report to the Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences.

Essential Functions

  • Offer both introductory and advanced courses directly related to scheduled instruction, including lecture, laboratory, clinical, performance and coaching assignments.

  • Conduct student assessment activities.

  • Develop and utilize a course syllabus for each course, following established institutional guidelines.

  • Be accountable for collaborative and applied research in various disciplines, including assistance with grant applications and data analysis on funded grants.

  • Perform teaching, scholarship, service, professional development, and program assessment for accreditation.

  • Advise students for both academic and career fields.

  • Give individual evaluations of student performance including midterm and final grades.

  • A thorough understanding of technology, learning management systems (LMS) and computer applications is essential (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, PowerCampus, Jenzabar, LinkedIn Learning).

  • Actively participate in department and university initiatives to ensure quality programs, FLDOE program accreditation, and overall excellence in the teacher education program.

  • Advise, recruit and support retention of undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Exhibit strong skills in educational technology (Zoom, Blackboard, email, and others), scholarly research, and collaboration.

  • Deliver in a professional manner course content for any assigned course(s) as specified by the master syllabus and/or as directed by the Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishments of the responsibilities and functions of the Education and Social Sciences Department.

  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the department head from assigning tasks that logically relate to the position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Literacy/Reading Education- (priority-must have appropriate credentialing and degree attainment).

  • Ability to foster a collaborative academic environment and cross-disciplinary initiative.

  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.

  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, scholarship, service, and professional development.

  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.

  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.

  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, and LinkedIn Learning.

  • Proficient in using data in assessment and decision making.

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Minimum Requirements

  • An earned doctorate in Education (Ed. D or Ph.D.) in Reading/Literacy or a closely related field; and 18 graduate credits hours in Reading.

  • The ability to provide quality instruction in Reading.

  • The potential for peer reviewed research, scholarly and/or creative accomplishment by representing the University in Reading.

  • The potential to have a positive impact through service that represents the University on campus and within the greater community.

  • Eighteen graduate hours in TESOL (highly recommended but not required).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in teaching appropriate university courses and online teaching.

  • Demonstrated potential for success in research and grant work.

  • Active Educator Certification.

  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.

  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
