Position: The Department of Music at Truman State University seeks applicants for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor with primary teaching responsibilities in Applied Trumpet. This is a one-year (with possible renewal), nine-month, full-time appointment that will begin in August 2024.

Responsibilities to include:

  • Teach Applied Trumpet to majors, minors, and non-majors

  • Actively recruit new trumpet students

  • Additional duties as assigned, according to the candidate's area of specialization and needs of the Music Department. Current departmental teaching needs may include: one or more courses in the Dialogues (Truman's general education program); Music Theory and Musicianship; Conducting; Music Business; or Recording Services Supervisor. Applicants are encouraged to describe their experience in any of these areas, plus additional strengths they may possess.

Program: The Department of Music offers degrees of Bachelor of Music with emphases in Composition and Performance, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy and Music Business, Master of Arts in Music (Conducting, Composition, Performance and Research emphases), and minors in Music, Jazz Studies, Musicology, and Musical Theatre.

Additionally, the Department provides content support for the Master of Arts in Education (MAE in Music) degree, the degree by which music students pursue certification to teach in public schools. Seventeen full-time and six part-time faculty members provide instruction to approximately 100 majors. A full complement of ensembles provides training for students and cultural resources for the community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or ABD in Trumpet Performance or closely related field.

  • Demonstrable performing and teaching ability in Trumpet Performance.

  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to the liberal arts and collegiality within the learning community.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to Required Qualifications):

  • Doctorate in Trumpet Performance or closely related field.

  • Documented university teaching experience with a record of student achievement.

  • Strong secondary teaching and skill area(s) from the list of responsibilities.
