Position Overview

The Butler University Department of History, Anthropology, and Classics invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History of Early Modern Europe, broadly defined.

The Department encourages applicants who challenge traditional understandings of Europe and the Early Modern period, and who center their work around topics of movement, migration, trade, or cultural exchanges. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and research focuses on Europe and its global connections to Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Oceania. Candidates will be expected to offer survey courses on the history of Europe, upper-level courses in their area of expertise, and general education courses in Butler University's core curriculum (including in Butler's Global and Historical Studies program or in the First-Year Seminar). Candidates should offer evidence of a commitment to high-impact teaching practices, mentoring undergraduate research, and supporting an increasingly diverse student population.

Many faculty members also choose to affiliate with interdisciplinary programs, including: International Studies; Peace and Conflict Studies; Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and Science, Technology, and Environmental Studies. Scholars from historically marginalized groups are highly encouraged to apply. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in history or a related field before the position begins in August 2025. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion and intercultural development in the work environment and be eager to contribute to inclusion efforts on campus.

Applications

Applicants must submit:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • A cover letter explaining how the applicant's teaching and research align with the position description as well as the mission of the department and university
  • A writing sample (article or chapter length)
  • A teaching statement, which includes pedagogical approaches and possible course offerings that foster an inclusive learning environment (1 page single-spaced)
  • A list of 3 references, including name, title, and contact information

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide evidence of teaching excellence and 3 letters of recommendation as early as the end of October.

Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2024 and continue until the position has been filled. Direct inquiries to Zachary Scarlett (zscarlet@butler.edu), chair of the search committee.
