Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Geology at the University of Hawai?i at Hilo (UH Hilo) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. We are seeking applicants who will integrate place-based teaching and research expertise in geologic hazards and risk relevant to our location on the Island of Hawai?i.

The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and research at the undergraduate level, including working with students from a variety of backgrounds and those from traditionally underrepresented groups. The successful candidate should be a collaborative investigator who will develop a research program that involves undergraduate students and augments the current expertise within the department. The ideal applicant will also be able to teach a broad range of courses throughout our curriculum including the development of new courses in geologic hazards and risk assessment with relevance to local communities.

The UH Hilo Geology Department offers bachelor's degrees in geology (BS and BA). In addition, the Geology Department serves as the home department for the BA degree in Natural Sciences. The department houses a teaching laboratory in petrology and a geoarchaeology lab with a ThermoNoran Quant'X EDXRF, a Phillips SEM with WDS and EDS, and an FTIR. Faculty also have access to facilities elsewhere on campus including an ICP and other instruments housed in the UH Hilo Analytical Laboratory, the UH Hilo Spatial Data and Analysis Laboratory, and a PulseEKKO ground penetrating radar. Faculty are encouraged to take advantage of the department's collaborative relationship with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), and/or other local collaborators outside of the University.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Teaching duties include a variety of introductory geology courses and labs, and upper-level specialty courses in the successful candidate's areas of expertise. UH Hilo requires teaching the equivalent of three courses per semester, with the remainder of the workload devoted to scholarly activity and service.

• Advise students and contribute to student retention and recruitment efforts.

• Curriculum and program development in geology and natural sciences.

• Engage in research or equivalent scholarship.

• Perform service to the university, community, and/or profession.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctorate in geology or a related field from an accredited university at the time of appointment.

• Teaching experience in geology at the college level.

• Active research activities as evidenced by peer-reviewed publication within the last five years.

• High-quality communication skills as demonstrated by articulate cover letter and curriculum vitae that details how the candidate meets the minimum and desired qualifications.

Desirable Qualifications

• Demonstrated record of high-quality undergraduate instruction.

• Evidence of the ability to teach courses in geology that will augment existing teaching capabilities as outlined in the section on duties and responsibilities.

• Experience working with a diverse student body or integrating perspectives of Indigenous peoples into science teaching.

• Experience in recruitment and retention of students.

• Experience or interest in being an advisor or mentor for undergraduate student research.

• Active research program that involves collaborative activities.

• Evidence of research that incorporates volcanic landscapes or a research program that will leverage the local geology.

Pay range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
