Job Summary

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science, this position is a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment as an Assistant Professor of Forensic Science, beginning in Spring 2025. The successful candidate will teach 12 semester hours of forensic science and/or chemistry courses. Faculty responsibilities include delivering online courses, contributing to program and curriculum development, providing academic mentoring, participating in scholarly activities, promoting student success, and engaging in institutional service. The candidate is also expected to establish an active research program that secures external funding. Areas of interest include forensic toxicology, digital forensics, and forensic anthropology, with a focus on undergraduate student involvement. Faculty may be asked to perform job-related duties not specifically described in this description.

The department offers a Forensic Science program with chemistry and biology tracks, as well as a Chemistry program that includes an ACS-certified Bachelor of Science and a Pre-Med chemistry track. It has established strong collaborative relationships with industry and federal, state, and local government agencies, including Customs and Border Protection, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Savannah Police Department, Chatham County Police Department, Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, and private crime laboratories. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, including HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, real-time PCR, thermocyclers, BioTek microplate readers, UV-Vis, NMR, FT-IR, Raman, CD, and more. Additionally, a virtual reality technology center is utilized for teaching chemistry and forensic science courses.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching 12 semester hours of forensic science and chemistry courses.

  • Participating in forensic science curriculum development.

  • Engaging in online course delivery.

  • Engaging in student success activities, including building and enhancing existing forensic science internship programs with government agencies and industry.

  • Establishing an active research program in chemistry/forensic science that involves undergraduate students.

  • Writing grant applications to secure extramural and competitive funding.

  • Performing program assessments as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Forensic Science or a closely related field from an accredited institution. The Ph.D. must be conferred by the commencement date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in forensic science-related expertise; postdoctoral training and/or teaching experience; research interests in forensic toxicology, digital forensics, and forensic anthropology.

Proposed Salary

The proposed salary range is $58,000.00 to $62,000.00.
