Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications

The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Film and Media Studies.

The ideal candidate will be a scholar-practitioner with a terminal degree (Ph.D. or MFA) and the ability to teach courses in our core Film Studies curriculum, such as Film Genres, Film History, and advanced special topics courses, as well as an Introduction to Production course.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

We seek candidates who bring attributes that support the department's mission and complement the department, program, and college's existing strengths.

We are interested in faculty members who have cultivated skills to communicate with, teach, and support others who do and do not share aspects of their own identity.

The desired area of research specialization is open, though the department particularly seeks candidates with expertise in South American or East Asian geopolitical boundaries.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of English houses over 450 majors, and employs 43 tenured and tenure-track faculty and approximately 50 non-tenure track faculty. We are firmly committed to faculty governance, teaching excellence, active scholarship, and university and community service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The teaching load is 3/3, and this position affords the opportunity to help expand our current Film Studies offerings to include courses in production and/or post-production.

ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position.

Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
