Lees-McRae is a small, four-year, liberal arts college serving Appalachia and the Southeastern United States. The College is located in the town of Banner Elk in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. Banner Elk is nestled between two popular ski areas and is within a short drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Appalachian Trail. Summary/Objective

The May School of Natural and Health Sciences at Lees-McRae College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Exercise Science. This is a full-time, main campus faculty position that will begin August 2024. At the time of hire, the successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. degree in the area of Exercise Science, Human Performance, Health and Wellness, or a closely related field.

The successful candidate will be required to teach lectures and laboratory courses in the areas of Exercise Science, Descriptive Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Health and Wellness Assessment, and Exercise Testing and Prescription. The faculty member will serve as the Program Coordinator for the Exercise Science program and contribute to the further development of the Sciences curriculum for these courses and others, in collaboration with Sciences faculty.

Essential functions:

Administrative Duties

  • Develop a robust Exercise Science program which will include innovative teaching methods, instructional technologies, and active learning strategies to enhance student learning outcomes.

  • Assure achievement of the program's goals and outcomes through annual course and program assessment.

  • Complete program review every five years.

  • Align EXS curriculum with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and COAES standards.

  • Develop internship experiences that provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills gained from direct instruction.

  • Review program curriculum and modify as needed.

  • Build fall and spring course schedules.

  • Hire and mentor adjunct faculty as needed.

  • Represent the program at Open House, Bobcat Day and Scholars Day recruiting events

  • Provide supervision, administration, and coordination of the instructional staff in the academic and clinic phases of the educational program

Teaching

  • The faculty member will be required to teach 12-credit hours per semester.

  • Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to: classroom management, student assessment of course learning outcomes, ability to develop and deliver engaging lectures, lead laboratory sessions, and supervise student research projects.

  • Maintain professional standards of practice in teaching in the classroom

  • Meet LMC standards for course syllabi creation and submission, classroom management, use of technology including the college learning management system, grade submission, and records management.

  • The faculty member must be able to integrate research into undergraduate curriculum and is expected to mentor students in their senior research project or capstone experience.

Advising

  • Support student success through mentoring, tutoring, and advising

  • Provide proactive student advisement to assigned advisees

  • Faculty maintain regular office hours to meet with students as outlined in the Faculty Handbook

Scholarship and Professional Development

  • The faculty member is expected to continue their professional development and maintain currency in their field through seminars, classes, and scholarship.

  • Faculty promote and support undergraduate research opportunities.

Service

  • Faculty members are expected to serve on committees of School, College, and Faculty Senate. Faculty are encouraged to participate in service to their community and field.

  • Faculty attend and participate in scheduled faculty/administrative meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of the May School of Natural and Health Sciences.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to stand for periods of time.

The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Human Performance, Health and Wellness, or related field

Exercise Sciences may include, but are not limited to, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Human Performance, Sports or Movement Science

In-depth knowledge of exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, exercise psychology, exercise prescription, and other relevant subfields within exercise science.

Experience working with diverse populations across the lifespan, including athletes, individuals with chronic diseases or disabilities, and older adults

Appropriate teaching experience at the college level, excellent oral and written communication skills, a high level of organization and detail-oriented perspective, and the ability to consistently multi-task.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience teaching undergraduate courses in exercise science or related disciplines State licensure or certification, if applicable, to practice as an exercise physiologist or related healthcare professional

  • Practical experience in the field of exercise science, such as working as a clinical exercise physiologist, personal trainer, athletic trainer, or strength and conditioning coach

  • Relevant certifications from professional organizations, such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), or other accredited certifying bodies.
