The School of Education at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland is pleased to announce two faculty positions in the Department of Childhood and Early Childhood Education. It is our goal to hire two exceptional scholars with a record of commitment to the academic success of historically marginalized groups of students and engagement in scholarly activity and service at the intersection of STEM education, anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Positions include two Assistant Professor of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction (tenure-track) lines to begin August 2025.

The Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department offers degree programs in Early Childhood and Childhood Education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are committed to providing future educators with unique learning opportunities that merge coursework from our programs with early practice teaching experiences in our Professional Development School (PDS) consortium. Our programs prepare teachers to create child-centered, inquiry-based and developmentally appropriate learning environments and to advocate for children's equitable educational opportunities from birth through grade six. We are committed to preparing teachers to respond to the needs of all children and families in an increasingly diverse and global society. Early Childhood and Childhood Education faculty represent a rich array of interests with core values including effective leadership, policy formulation, inquiry, equity, eco-justice and collaboration. The position provides an opportunity to join a department with an innovative approach to teacher education.

Major Responsibilities

Prepare and teach undergraduate and graduate elementary methods courses within at least one of the following areas of specialization: math, science, educational technology and/or curriculum and instruction, demonstrate knowledge of issues of diversity, equity and inclusion, advise and work with students to support their success, observe practicum and student teachers, work in professional development schools and build partnerships with child care centers and schools, maintain a productive research agenda, participate in the affairs of the department, School of Education and College, including but not limited to committee work and curriculum development, and participate in ongoing data collection and analysis to productively participate in program review and accreditation.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

  • Reports to the academic department chair

  • Works closely with department faculty

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in elementary math, science or educational technology education, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field, or ABD with completion date within one year of initial appointment

  • Knowledge of elementary STEM education curriculum and best practices for elementary school age children

  • Knowledge of learning standards for elementary STEM education and elementary educator professional preparation and related issues regarding curriculum implementation and assessments

  • Evidence of a scholarly agenda including research based presentations and/or publications

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years' successful experience teaching in elementary school settings

  • Experience teaching in schools with culturally diverse populations including English language learners and experience teaching children with disabilities and/or knowledge about children with disabilities

  • College teaching experience

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize technology and integrate it into instruction

  • Experience working in professional development schools and/or in partnership with P-6 schools

  • Experience in elementary STEM curriculum integration and collaborative teaching
