The School of Natural Sciences at Black Hills State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in the Forest and Grassland Ecology emphasis in Biology, beginning August 2024 or January 2025. The successful candidate will join a large and diverse Natural Science department and will complement other faculty in areas such as botany, entomology, vertebrate zoology, environmental geology.

DUTIES:

The successful candidate will teach courses within the Forest and Grassland Ecology emphasis in Biology and Biology major at large. Additionally, there may be course options within the MS program in Sustainability. We seek broadly trained candidates who complement existing strengths in the School of Natural Sciences; individuals with expertise in soils, silviculture, forest pathology, wildfire, ecophysiology, or GIS/GPS methods are especially encouraged to apply. Opportunities include shaping and growing this relatively new program, working with regional agencies and industry stakeholders to build awareness of career opportunities, involve undergraduates in research, and prepare students for employment in the forestry, environmental science, and related sectors. Primary responsibilities include successful teaching, participation in student recruitment and mentoring in support of the Forest and Grassland Ecology emphasis, scholarship affiliated with forest ecosystems, and service aligned with professional opportunities for students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in Environmental Science, Forestry, Biology, Natural Resources, or related field.
  • ABD will be considered if degree completion will occur no later than August 21, 2025. If the candidate is ABD, the initial contract will be at a $4,000 lower salary and a term-contract. A salary increase and tenure track will be granted upon degree completion.

The School of Natural Sciences at Black Hills State University is a vibrant, growing division with approximately 23 faculty members in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics. Faculty emphasize undergraduate teaching and mentoring, and conduct research, involving students in multiple biological and environmental disciplines. Projects are funded through a variety of state wildlife, federal agency, and partnership grants, and utilize the largest Herbarium in the state, a scanning electron microscope and multiple well-equipped laboratories on campus, in addition to the Black Hills State University Underground Campus (BHUC) at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD. The Center for the Conservation of Biological Resources (CCBR) is a shared research laboratory containing research space and commonly used equipment required for genetics and genomics research. WestCore is a Genetics/Genomics sequencing core facility that provides services including NextGen genome, transcriptome, and Sanger sequencing, genotyping, and quantitative real-time qPCR and dPCR services; WestCore also houses a cell culture area and an RNA isolation room. The BHSU Underground Campus (BHUC) houses Sanford Lab's low-background counting facility, a class-1,000 cleanroom, and an adjoining workspace available for use in a variety of disciplines. Managed by BHSU, the underground campus partners with groups around the globe to create unique opportunities for collaborative research in physics, chemistry, biology, and geophysics.
