Agriculture in today's world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products.

ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, and Ph.D. degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties

Teach ECG700-01:

Fundamentals of Microeconomics. Develop an outstanding research and engagement program related to the economics of horticultural crops production and marketing. Develop an outstanding record of scholarly research which will include participation in interdisciplinary research and in extramurally funded research projects; develop a strong outreach and engagement program

with horticultural crop stakeholders in NC; mentor graduate students; and teach one course per year. May be able to work from home several days per week with supervisor approval, but some in-person work on a regular weekly basis is required.

Minimum Education and Experience

PhD in Agricultural & Resource Economics, Economics, or related field. Must have demonstrated experience with: researching interdisciplinary economics topics related to specialty crop production and marketing with strong prior scholarly contributions including research papers and conference presentations; empirical and theoretical economic analysis of specialty crop business topics and trends, including budgeting, investment, and government policy; teaching of agricultural and resource economics courses at the graduate and undergraduate level, including developing classroom material, such as lectures, labs, and problems sets; creating articles, technical reports, and in-person presentations for agricultural stakeholders; and communicating scientific concepts and economic and policy issues to farmers, policymakers, and scientists working in the specialty crop related areas.
