Posting Summary

The Department of Geography at Rutgers University invites applicants for a Tenure Track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Political Ecology

. We seek candidates with a focus on patterns of uneven development and how they shape resource systems and users. We specifically look to hire a scholar with demonstrated commitment to in-depth fieldwork in a developing world region.

We seek a candidate who emphasizes the history and political economy of resource use, and applies empirical insights to advance larger theoretical understandings of political ecology and international development. Possible areas of specialization include, but are not limited to, agro-pastoral or agro-food systems, conservation, environmental change, health and disease ecologies, land management, marine ecologies or maritime economies, resource extraction or conflict, rivers or water infrastructure, or urban political ecology.

We will give preference to candidates whose interests complement the teaching and research profile of the departments faculty. Rutgers University offers a dynamic and diverse intellectual environment where the ideal candidate will seek to engage not only with Geography faculty but also with other units on campus such as the Center for Cultural Analysis, Center for Historical Analysis, Rutgers Climate Institute, or any of several regional studies programs such as the Centers for African, South Asian, Middle Eastern, or Latin American Studies.

Required qualifications:

PhD in Geography or closely related discipline; demonstrated excellence in scholarly research; commitment to excellence in teaching and advising of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Desired qualifications: teaching experience in a college or university setting in geography or a related discipline; demonstrated capacity to secure external research funding; experience advising graduate students or preparedness to begin immediate advising responsibilities.

The successful candidate will develop a program of research in any of a number of potential areas of research in gerontology or geriatric/palliative medicine including, but not limited to, behavioral health, minority health, health equity, trauma exposure, violence, biopsychosocial behaviors in prevention and treatment, chronic disease management and health outcomes, and evaluation of health policy and delivery system initiatives.
