VIEW JOBS 1/5/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-04-05T00:00 Job Function: The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a compassionate and organized individual to serve as an academic advisor for our undergraduate program. You will be a member of the Mechanical Engineering department academic team and will be responsible for, but not limited to: advising and counseling undergraduate students and integrated master bachelor (IMB) program students on academic progress and issues; academic status management; degree completion certification, course selection and study abroad opportunities; mentoring/advising of student groups; cohort/community building among students. Your core responsibilities will include: * Advising - Part of Mechanical Engineering Academic Advising Team. Meets privately with approximately 50% of the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students, former advisees that have moved to the IMB program, and study-abroad students to review academic progress (approximately 225 total students). Assists students to develop academic schedules to maximize completion of the major, second majors, and minors. Provides in-depth information concerning course descriptions, instructors, prerequisites, waitlists, etc. Performs on-line academic audits of student records. Produces audit reports and excel course planning sheets for advisees. Reviews records of students facing Academic Actions. Trouble-shoots general problems and questions concerning CMU and student life. Connects students to supportive resources on campus. Prepares and submits effort reports/tracks enrollment figures. Available to students for walk-in and scheduled appointments. Maintains student records on file. Works closely with Career and Professional Development. Registers and supports exchange students from abroad, including special programs. Assists students who will be studying abroad. Assists students proposing co-op experiences. Prepares and presents information sessions related to fall/spring group advising, first year orientation, fundamentals class presentations, IMB, and study abroad. May also include: Assists with the development of advising programs to address specific needs, i.e. minority or first year retention, foreign students, etc. Responsible for training new faculty on department procedures. Responsible for assigning faculty mentors to undergraduate students. * Program Coordination and Development - Represents and promotes the department at undergraduate recruitment events. Meets with prospective students and/or families as needed. Assists with organization of the department diploma ceremony. Participates in Selection Committee for outstanding students for annual awards. Provides support for the Undergraduate Education Committee (UEC) for new initiatives and procedures. Enters grades for instructors as needed. * Promotes undergraduate community through co-curricular and extracurricular activities and events. Advise/mentor student groups. Assists with planning and implementing class dinners, town meetings and other student events. Serves on the Student Advisory Committee and provides follow-up and implementation of recommendations based on SAC feedback. * Updates the Mechanical Engineering portion of the CMU Undergraduate Catalog in consultation with the Department Head. Prepares engineering accreditation reports in collaboration with Department Head and UEC. This may include writing portions of text as well as producing tables and graphs.
