Description:

The Cardiovascular Division in collaboration with the Lillehei Heart Institute offers state of the art technologies and core facilities with specialized equipment to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the large animal model. This facility supports the study of cardiac arrest, ischemia, and reperfusion injury with the use of reperfusion techniques. We are accepting applications for a highly motivated assistant professor to engage in the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Develop experimental models, improved CPR protocols, and implemented novel strategies to enhance perfusion and reduce reperfusion injury during cardiac arrest and resuscitation.

  • Improve strategies for cerebral oxygen delivery, and implement extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for immediate and post-resuscitation care.

  • Increase understanding of basic cardiomyocyte biology to identify and develop therapeutic target of augmented cardiac ketone body utilization during heart failure.

  • Responsible for evaluation of machine learning algorithms to optimize CPR in the lab as well as artificial intelligence initiatives in progress.

  • Jointly supervise post docs, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

  • Serve as co-PI of one grant submission per year.

  • Produce minimally one first authored publication and two co-authored publications per year.

Provide expertise to researchers in preparation of manuscripts (write relevant sections and make figures) and presentations.

Required Skills:

  • Expertise in cardiovascular metabolism

  • Familiarity with large animal laboratory processes, procedures, and equipment

  • Knowledge of cardiomyocyte ketone body metabolism

  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Experience with communicating results and concepts with a diverse audience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement machine learning techniques and algorithms.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the Linux computing environment.

  • Excellent planning, organization and execution skills.

  • Positive attitude and good interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to prepare manuscripts for presentation and publication.

Required Experience:

  • Ph.D. or Masters with equivalent experience in Biology, Cardiology, Physiology, or related discipline.

  • At least three years of post-doctoral experience in cardiovascular research.

  • Quantitative training with good understanding of probability, statistics and optimization.
