Position Title: Middle School Assistant Principal

Pay Grade: A-2 Period of Employment: 12 months

Description Approved/ Revised: 4/24 FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Principal

General Responsibilities: Directs and is accountable for the planning, assessment, instructional leadership, communication, community relations, and safety and administrative management required to manage the instructional and special programs, organization, and facilities of Metz Middle School (grades 7 and 8).

  • Drives the success of all students by facilitating the development, communication, implementation, and evaluation of a shared vision of teaching and learning that leads to student academic progress and school improvement.

  • Fosters the success of all students by developing, advocating, nurturing, and sustaining an academically rigorous, positive, welcoming, and safe school climate for all stakeholders.

  • Provides human resources leadership by selecting, inducting, supporting, evaluating, and retaining quality instructional and support personnel.

  • Cultivates the success of all students by supporting, managing, and overseeing the school's organization, operation, and use of resources.

  • Fosters the success of all students by communicating, collaborating, and engaging with family and community stakeholders to promote understanding and continuous improvement of the school's programs and services.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity and fosters culturally inclusive and responsive practices aligned with division and school goals, priorities, and strategies that support achievement for all students.

  • Fosters the success of all students by demonstrating behavior consistent with legal, ethical, and professional standards, engaging in continuous professional development, and contributing to the profession.

  • Provides leadership resulting in acceptable, measurable, and appropriate student academic progress based on established standards.

  • Proactively supports the MCPS Strategic Plan.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of others based on individual strengths and weaknesses, and to guide their professional growth.

  • Thorough understanding of the change process and demonstrated ability to lead staff in the school improvement process.

  • Possess extensive knowledge of the curriculum and instructional program including content and methodologies, and the integration of technology into the middle school instructional program.

  • Ability to analyze, interpret and utilize data.

  • Demonstrated ability to use research-based practices that results in higher student achievement.

  • Knowledge of middle school organizational philosophy.

  • Serve as a role model and promote a positive and professional demeanor in all interactions.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Virginia Postgraduate Professional Certificate with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision Pre-K-12 required.

  • Three to five years middle school level teaching or administrative experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
