Certificated Job Description

Coronado Unified School District seeks an assistant principal for its nationally recognized comprehensive high school. The new Assistant Principal will join a team committed to academic excellence; the cultivation of diverse opportunities for students, including athletics, an arts conservatory (CoSA), NJROTC, and career/technical pathways programs; and the fostering of a school environment that promotes students' social-emotional growth and strong relationships between peers and staff.

JOB SUMMARY

Provide administrative and technical staff assistance to the principal; assume responsibility for major portions of school operation; and assume operational responsibility of the high school in the absence of the principal. Exercises direct supervision over assigned site certificated and classified staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge:

Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, Smarter Balanced Assessment, as well as innovative instructional approaches, strategies and materials and current trends in 21st century education as well as non-traditional educational settings such as blended learning environments.

Abilities:

Receive and implement direction from the principal; manage time and people effectively; organize, direct, and supervise any responsibilities delegated by the Principal. In addition, the candidate must possess skills for effectively working in a cooperative manner with certificated and classified staff.

Goal Setting Skills:

Ability to define and prioritize specific goals and objectives for the organization as well as for their professional effectiveness; understand and communicate the school district's mission and strategic plan effectively to the public and staff.

Team Building Skills:

Capacity to work with people in an effective manner, building high morale, cohesiveness, and group commitments for goals and objectives; display an appreciation for collaborative discussion in order to gain sound commitment from all stakeholders .

Commitment to Task:

Ability to sustain strong commitment and perform at maximum effort to carry out specific courses of action for the school program, regardless of the labor and time necessary; believe that a strong work ethic is vital to the school achieving its goals.

Communication Skills:

Capacity to clearly present information, orally and in writing, in language that is effective and understandable in positive and negative circumstances; talent to speak appropriately with a wide variety of people while maintaining good eye contact, demonstrating a varied vocabulary and tailoring your language to any audience; listen effectively; work well in a group.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • California (or equivalent) Administrative Services Credential

  • Master's Degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major course work in education with an emphasis in educational administration or a related field

  • Required minimum of three years of credentialed service; desirable three or more years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience at the secondary level

  • Desired experience with all forms of disabilities and multiple service delivery models, elementary programs, and elementary students with disabilities

  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing

  • Ability to create constructive partnerships in a collaborative manner

  • Ability to communicate effectively, written and verbal, with both students and staff

ENVIRONMENT

Working Conditions

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and /or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 25 % walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed in a school environment.

Physical Demands

  • Good health and good physical condition, agility, stamina, dexterity, mobility and strength commensurate with duties of the class.

  • Requires lifting of up to 50 pounds.

  • Work evenings and/or weekends, as necessary, in addition to regular hours.

  • Sit at and operate a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Travel from site to site and move to various work locations.

  • Sufficient vision to read text on a computer screen, in technical manuals, and on office forms and reports.

  • Sufficient hearing and speech to comprehend office conversation and to communicate orally in a clear, understandable manner.

  • Possess good people skills.
