Elementary Assistant Principal
South Elementary School
New Canaan Public Schools
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the elementary principal and consistent with the policies, rules and regulation of the Board of Education, the elementary assistant principal assists the principal in the overall management of students and the operation of the school. The assistant principal reports directly to the building principal.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum and Instruction
Support building and district initiatives in curriculum and instruction.
Assist principal in setting annual building goals related to instruction.
Promote student achievement in work with staff, students and parents.
Assist in the preparation of state and district reports.
Gather and interpret student performance data for use in instructional planning and decision making.
Assist principal in evaluating student progress and reporting student performance.
Coordinate all standardized testing requirements.
School Climate and Student Welfare
Help create a learning environment in which all school members are valued.
Maintain a safe environment for all students.
Model, promote and maintain appropriate student behavior.
Help students develop self-discipline.
Maintain open and timely communication with students.
Addresses effectively problems related to staff and students.
Coordinate student activities.
Attend school activities and performances outside of the school day.
Supervise lunchroom, playgrounds, etc., as needed.
Management
Assist with the creation of the master schedule and assignment of teachers.
Provide direction and assistance to staff with student record keeping and reporting.
Assist in the development of the annual budget.
Assist in the recruitment and selection of staff.
Maintain records and submit reports as requested by the principal.
Meet regularly with the principal.
Oversee bus transportation issues and concerns.
Manage school maintenance requests.
Review and approve all requests for building use as assigned by the principal.
Oversee all interns and teaching assistant's schedules and responsibilities.
Community Relations
Promote the programs of the school district.
Assist with writing newsletters, press releases and other communications related to school matters.
Establish and maintain favorable relationships with parents and local community groups and individuals for the purpose of fostering understanding and soliciting support for the school program.
Professional Development
Model instruction in the classroom and serve as a resource person for best practices.
Assist in the design and planning of professional development activities.
Keep abreast of current trends in elementary curriculum, instruction, supervision and administration.
Encourage and support professional growth activities.
Communicate effectively with staff, students and the school community.
Supervision and Evaluation
Evaluates and supervises certified and non-certified staff as assigned by the principal.
Provides direction and coaching to staff as needed.
Observes and documents staff performance.
Provides constructive feedback as appropriate.
Engages in professional dialogue with staff and encourages self-reflection.
General
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements

Assist in overall leadership & administration of faculty and staff
Assure effective implementation of curricula
Communicate effectively with students, faculty & parents
Hold or be eligible for Connecticut Administrative Certification (092)
Previous teaching or administrative experience at elementary school level
