Applications for the Assistant Pool Manager position are now being accepted for the City of La Vista Swimming Pool's 2024 season. Applicants must be at least 19 years of age, have obtained a High School Diploma or GED, have a minimum two years of prior lifeguarding experience, possess a Pool Operators License along with lifeguard and CPR certification, and know basic first aid before starting work in the position.

Starting wage rate is $17.50 per hour. The City will also pay for the required swimsuit. Work hours will vary during the week, including evenings and weekends.

Description:

Under the direction of the Pool Manager and Assistant Recreation Director, respectively, this position assists in the day-to-day operations of the municipal swimming pool and the enforcement of pool rules and regulations; performs basic public safety and recreational work in supervising swimming activities and subordinate personnel.

Essential Functions: (with or without reasonable accommodation)

  • Assists in the direction and supervision of all municipal swimming pool operations in accordance with applicable federal, state and local rules and regulations.

  • Responsible for enforcing pool rules and regulations.

  • Assists in the supervision and assignment of work schedules for all pool employees. Assists in directing lifeguard rotation system, break system and determining whether to close the pool during inclement weather.

  • Assists in the supervision of lifeguards and swim instructors and assists lifeguards in rescuing swimmers from water when in difficulty.

  • Assists with and participates in in-service training and orientation for pool staff.

  • Assists with and directs employees with routine maintenance and cleaning operations of the pool facility and surrounding area.

  • Responsible for assisting with filter operation of the pool and daily water chemical testing.

  • Assists with routine maintenance and cleaning operations of the pool facility and office, including but not limited to toilets, shower walls, sweeping the deck, picking up garbage and vacuuming the pool.

  • Responsible to assist with collecting, recording, and depositing all monies received from use of the swimming pool.

  • Assists with developing operating procedures/guidelines for swimming pool, bathhouse, and office.

  • Reports non-routine and/or major operational problems to the Assistant Recreation Director and maintenance problems to the Park Foreman.

  • Assists in serving as public relations representative for swimming pool, accepts public comments, and resolves problems and complaints.

  • Maintains all required records concerning the pool including the condition of the water, chemicals used, number of persons using the pool, accidents/injuries, and other relevant information.

  • Participates and assists in lifeguarding activities as directed and teaches swimming lessons.

  • Procures chemicals, cleaning supplies and small equipment in accordance with city regulations.

  • Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of times. The employee is occasionally asked to walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear. Some duties include sweeping, mopping and cleaning.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to hear and understand voices at normal conversational levels.

Education, Training, License, Certification and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.

  • Must be 19 years of age or older.

  • Minimum of two years of prior lifeguarding experience.

  • Prior pool management experience is preferred.

  • Current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent; American Red Cross Standard First Aid; American Red Cross CPR or American Heart Association CPR; and Pool Operators License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work a varying schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to consistently maintain regular and dependable attendance.

  • Ability to plan, schedule, instruct and supervise work of employees.

  • Thorough knowledge of water safety principles and ability to perform water safety instruction.

  • Good skills in all phases of swimming and aquatic safety.

  • Thorough knowledge and ability to perform lifesaving techniques and first aid treatment.

  • Ability to follow directions and work independently.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with city officials, volunteers, members of the public, employees and patrons.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.

  • Conflict management skills.

  • Ability to provide own transportation.

  • Basic mathematical and money changing skills.

  • Ability to develop work schedules.

  • Ability to supervise employees.

  • Ability to act competently in emergency situations.
