You're work will include assisting rural Multnomah County property owners with land-use issues, spending time at the customer service counter helping people meet their needs, explaining zoning regulations, answering questions and processing land use applications, drafting land use findings and assisting with development meetings with applicants. You might also spend time researching federal, state and local policies and regulations, conducting field inspections, reviewing land use applications, and preparing staff reports with finding and conditions of approval. In this entry level position, you will provide support to planners and senior planners while learning to apply professional planning principles.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in planning, public administration, or related field.

  • Or a combination of relevant education and work experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to complete the work described.

However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates.   • A strong interest in rural land use planning and being in a generalist role

  • Ability to learn and understand the program area subject matter and related laws, regulations, and policies

  • Ability to make sound decisions based on research and analysis

  • Ability to lead through collaboration, team building, mentoring, and coaching, and model this leadership style for others

  • Ability to work calmly under pressure, demonstrating the ability to think clearly and quickly while mastering multiple tasks

  • Business letter writing and basic report preparation techniques

  • Proper spelling, grammar and punctuation

  • Basic mathematical principles, drafting and graphic techniques

  • Basic legal principles of the planning process

  • Work independently under deadlines

Type of Position: This hourly, union-represented position is eligible for overtime.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, with some flexibility with start/end times. Option to work a 9/80 schedule.

Note regarding salary placement: New employees and rehires will be paid at the minimum rate in the range for their classification unless a higher rate is approved by the Appointing Authority.
