Performs a variety of responsible and specialized tasks in the physical care and classroom instruction of handicapped students; and assists handicapped students in meeting the physical requirements of attending school.

Various opportunities exist for on-call or long-term SUBSTITUTE assignments only. Positions are 9.25 months per year and range from 3 to 6 hours per day.

Assists students upon arrival and departure at school and throughout the school day by repositioning in wheel chairs or other necessary appliances.

Assists students with washing, eating, toilet, and other personal care needs.

Provides basic emergency care as needed, including cardio pulmonary resuscitation or other life sustaining efforts until medical assistance arrives.

Performs specialized physical health care services such as, suctioning, gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, oxygen administration and care of related equipment, and administers medication as directed.

Completes written accident or incident reports as needed.

Changes sheets and linens and prepares cots and beds for rest periods.

Interprets students' needs to the teacher.

Cleans and maintains activity rooms, equipment, and utensils.

Supervises students in physical and instructional activities providing assistance as directed by a teacher.

Observes and reports on students' progress.

Performs a variety of office clerical tasks such as typing and preparing dittos and stencils.

Assists in administering, scoring, and maintaining records or tests.

Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards: Knowledge of:

Personal needs and behavioral characteristics of handicapped children.

Special education materials, practices, concepts, and techniques.

Record keeping principles and procedures.

Classroom procedures and rules of conduct.

Basic emergency, first aid, and health care techniques.

Clerical practices and procedures.

Ability to:

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.

Lift and move handicapped students (approximately 50 - 75 pounds).

Observe, evaluate, and report on student's progress.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Compile and maintain records and files.

Assist handicapped students with personal care needs and activities.

Operate a variety of office machines.

Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications:

One year of experience working with handicapped individuals.

Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

Hiring for this position is on as-needed basis and could occur at anytime during a school year. There is no regular exam or hiring schedule.

A review of applicants' experience and qualifications is conducted periodically. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the District will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination utilizes Assessment Center techniques, which will include a technical interview.

The noise level is moderate and there is a potential for exposure to infectious diseases and blood-borne pathogens. It requires the ability to stand and sit for hours at a time (with some bending and stooping), ability to use manual dexterity in relation to clinical requirements, and ability to lift 50 lbs. Hours may vary based on location, patient volume, and business needs.
