POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Assistant or Associate Professor* of Interdisciplinary Art + Design (IAD) is an integral full-time position reporting to the undergraduate IAD program Chair. The program takes a progressive approach to art and design education offering a tailored curriculum utilizing the breadth of the College's major offerings, key open-media IAD studios, a dynamic student mentoring program encouraging studio exploration, skill-building, professional development, and innovation, with opportunities for general studies minors such as Sustainability and Social Responsibility.

The successful candidate will be an experienced educator with a strong record of accomplishment demonstrating skills and scholarship. They will possess practical, hands-on professional experience and theoretical knowledge of the contextual and critical studies relevant to inter-, cross-, multi-, trans-, and/or post-disciplinary practices. This may include matters of sustainability, participatory design, media studies, fluency in analog and digital environments, or creative entrepreneurship. They will be able to deliver an exceptional, holistic, learning-centered experience, which requires strength in mentoring and motivating students to achieve their full potential to meet a wide range of industry and established program standards.

Preferred candidates will present evidence of teaching excellence in single-discipline and/or interdisciplinary studio programs, a strong exhibition and/or publishing record and/or industry experience, and demonstrate an interest in mentoring young artists and designers in theory and practice. They will have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and will collaborate with the Chair and the Program Manager for IAD, consistent with the College's strategic plan. They will assist the Chair's vision to foster and maintain the academic quality and integrity of the program, enhancing its visibility and reputation nationally and internationally.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Professor of Interdisciplinary Art + Design will teach 6 classes per academic year (three each semester) including the potential to teach other disciplines related to their strengths, and will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with the program Chair to nurture and develop curriculum and andragogy to keep courses and subject matter relevant, with an eye toward established and emerging industries

  • Mentoring students (see below) and Adjunct Faculty

  • Utilizing the College's Learning Management System (LMS) to support in-person instruction and the potential development of innovative remote courses

  • Participating in College-wide activities and strategic outreach, including: Faculty Assembly and Committees; Commencement Exercises; Review Week; selecting and installing work for the Annual Student Exhibition; Info Sessions, Meet & Greets, Portfolio Days, and other recruitment efforts; student retention; and re-accreditation

  • Collaborating with the Chair, Program Manager, and Adjunct Faculty in curriculum review and the systematic assessment of the program

  • Maintaining a personal professional practice

  • Nurturing relationships with cultural institutions and industries

The Interdisciplinary Art + Design program aims to deliver a holistic experience for its students. The Professor of IAD will be responsible for:

  • Mentoring assigned students by providing academic and professional guidance and counseling as well as coordination with Undergraduate Program Chairs when needed

  • Collaborating with other campus offices to support our students, such as Academic Advising and Registration, Career Development, Institutional Advancement, and International Student Services

  • Referring students for additional support when needed, such as to Student Wellness & Counselling and the Center for Writing & Tutoring

  • Encouraging student attendance and attending key visiting artist/designer events, and exhibition openings

  • Assisting the Chair with program-specific retention efforts

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies, ideally Intermedia or related, or BFA with at least 5 years of tested experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in higher education (teaching)

  • A strong collaborator with students, faculty, and staff

  • Ability to develop and advocate for internal and external creative partnerships to support curricular and strategic initiatives

  • Readiness to embrace new opportunities in education and uphold the sustainability of the department's portfolio

  • Values diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at the College

  • Substantive relevant professional experience working in art/design fields outside of academia

  • Advocate for integration of digital technologies used in educational and professional art/design environments

  • Passion for the program's educational mission and for the role of the arts in our society

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional office and college campus environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to maintain a stationary position, use a computer and other office equipment, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and virtually. Frequent interaction with others, including staff, faculty, students and third parties is required. The employee may occasionally be required to move files or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, including from low and high places. The ability to move around within the office and between buildings on campus, attend off-site meetings and events, and travel between Ford Campus site to Taubman Center site are required.
