Job Title: Assistant or Associate Medical Professor - Community Health and Social Medicine (2 Tenure Track positions)

Job ID: 21212

Location: CUNY School of Medicine

Regular/Temporary: Regular

The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY) located in the heart of Harlem, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Building upon more than 40 years of the success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, we offer a BS/MD degree and a Physician Assistant Master's Degree.

True to its legacy of access, opportunity and community transformation, the newly accredited CSOM's mission remains to recruit highly talented students as diverse as the city itself. CSOM places a special emphasis on recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine, and on training high quality, culturally competent clinicians equipped meet the healthcare needs of New York's medically under-served communities. As a major priority, CSOM seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty and staff to more closely reflect the diversity of our student body.

The Department of Community Health and Social Medicine of the CSOM seeks applications for two tenure track faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Medical Professor rank to teach courses in Population Health (e.g. epidemiology, social determinants of health, U.S. health care system, evidence-based medicine, etc.) to medical students. In addition, these individuals will be expected to establish and maintain extramurally funded research and teach in their area of expertise; engage in the development of population health and/or clinical interdisciplinary research and grant writing; and provide service to the department in the form of committee membership.

We strongly encourage candidates with education and experience in chronic disease epidemiology, community/public health, health disparities, healthcare delivery, or behavioral health to apply. The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience in developing curriculum that increases knowledge and understanding of how implicit biases, institutionalized prejudice and entrenched biased thinking disadvantage underserved communities and can and does effect medical research and teaching for serving such communities.

These positions represent excellent ground floor opportunities to contribute to the development and growth of a newly expanding mission-based medical school and to shape the direction of academic initiatives in community and population health by building upon a program with a long and rich history of recruiting underrepresented populations into medicine, increasing medical services in under served areas, and increasing the availability of primary care physicians. The positions include teaching, research, and guidance duties in area of expertise. They will share responsibility for committee, program, and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

Doctoral-level degree in a relevant discipline (Medicine, Epidemiology, Public or Community Health, Psychology, or health behavior) or other doctoral-level degree combined with another advanced degree in a relevant discipline. Must have the ability to teach successfully and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Strong methodological skills in quantitative and/or qualitative research and content expertise in chronic disease epidemiology, community/public health, health disparities, healthcare delivery or behavioral health. Demonstrated track record of presentations, teaching, grant-funded research, and publications.

Experience in supporting student academic success, particularly for members of under served populations of students: A commitment to teaching and team building within a mission base institution aimed at improving health for all.

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.
