The University of Virginia School of Law seeks to hire an Assistant or Associate Director of Financial Aid to join the Law School's Office of Financial Aid, Education and Planning. This position will report directly to the Assistant Dean of Financial Aid, Education and Planning. The Law School's Office of Financial Aid, Education and Planning is a small but mighty team of three looking for an Assistant or Associate Director to join us. We are a dynamic, tight-knit team dedicated to providing students with the financial knowledge and resources they need to make informed and educated decisions throughout their law school journeys.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Director role include:

  • Counsel law students through all aspects of the law school life cycle, from pre-law strategic planning to post-graduation financial advising.

  • Determine eligibility for financial assistance, as well as the type and amount of aid to be awarded in accordance with established federal and University standards and guidelines.

  • Conduct student loan entrance and exit counseling during individual appointments as well as in large group presentations.

  • Stay up to date on financial aid regulations, policies, procedures and financial counseling through self-directed professional reading, participation in professional development courses, and networking with professional contacts in the financial aid and student finance arena.

In addition to the above, Associate Director responsibilities include:

  • Ensure compliance in the packaging and timely disbursement of funds, including processing financial aid appeals, monitoring SAP, and completing R2T4 calculations, FAFSA verifications, and C-code resolutions.

  • Manage aspects of the federal Direct Loan Program, including loan awarding, processing, return of funds, and reconciliation.

  • Provide individual counseling to students on financial issues such as debt management, loan repayment, financial literacy, and regulatory guidelines.

  • Assist the Director in running UVA's Virginia Loan Forgiveness Program.

Education and Professional Experience:

This position will be filled at either the Assistant or Associate Director level depending on the candidate's education and experience.

Candidates for the Assistant Director:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least two years of financial aid experience required; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Experience working with students, especially graduate or professional degree students preferred.

Candidates for the Associate Director:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least four years of progressively responsible financial aid experience required.

  • Experience working with students, especially graduate or professional degree students preferred.

All Candidates' Minimum Experience:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal Title IV financial aid programs, awarding eligibility requirements, and supporting regulations.

  • Committed to providing quality assistance to a socio-economically diverse student population.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide innovative responsiveness to problem-solving within a team environment.

  • Process-oriented and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Can exercise good judgment when faced with difficult decisions.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong technical skills with Microsoft Office suite. Experience with PeopleSoft, ImageNow, and Department of Education web applications strongly preferred.

This is a full-time University Managerial and Professional staff position with benefits. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.

This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.
