University Advancement at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for an Assistant or Associate Director of Development, to join the development team supporting The Fralin Museum of Art, a division of UVA Arts. The Assistant/Associate Director will represent the University of Virginia, its programs, policies, personnel, traditions, philosophy, and objectives to all constituent groups. The Assistant/Associate Director will report to the Director of Development and will focus on fundraising efforts to support programs related to the priorities of The Fralin Museum of Art and UVA Arts. The Assistant/Associate Director will be responsible for building the museum's annual giving and membership programs and increasing leadership annual giving activity and results.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build and manage a portfolio of current and prospective leadership level donors (up to $10K) to move them towards giving levels that achieve annual and long-range fundraising goals of the University. Other activities will include:

  • Focus on building a new donor pipeline for the museums and the upcoming campaign through ongoing donor discovery and prospecting.

  • Develop a portfolio of potential individual, corporate, and foundation donor and prospects at the leadership annual giving level up to $10,000 by cultivating and soliciting these prospects.

  • Submit grant proposals up to $10,000 to foundations within the museum's portfolio.

  • Continue to develop, cultivate, and steward relationships with existing donors, with the goal of moving them towards becoming major gift prospects.

  • Create and implement cultivation structures that include prospect strategy development, face-to-face visits, continuous donor engagement, preparation of written materials, design and implementation of cultivation events, direct solicitation, and solicitation in tandem with volunteers and other staff.

  • Develop and implement strategic special events series, fundraising-related communications, annual campaigns, and new donor affinity groups in support of The Fralin's current fundraising priorities.

  • Recruit and provide high-level guidance to volunteers, advancement ambassadors, and student interns and volunteer board.

  • Solicit membership, annual fund, and reunion gifts with the goal of increasing alumni, members, and donors' annual giving up to the next recognition level.

  • Occasionally travel in and out of state to meet with donors, as well as attending meetings and facilitating programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • One year (Assistant)/three years (Associate) of related work experience.

  • A valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least three years of related work experience.

  • Detail-oriented with skills in communication and organization.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Knowledge of art and art history, with a general understanding of the art world.

  • Knowledge of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI) promotion.

  • Ability to discern priorities.

  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.

  • A high working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does require traveling to attend meetings and programs. The successful candidate must be able to travel frequently domestically and be available for occasional evening and weekend work.

UVA Advancement offers a flexible and hybrid workplace. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. Depending on the type of position and work performed, or as deemed by the manager, some positions may be required to work intermittently in an office space located in Charlottesville, Virginia. This position is eligible for hybrid work, with frequent in-person work on UVA Grounds required.

This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,000 - $75,000 commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
