JOB TITLE: Assistant Nurse Manager, Operating Room
The Assistant Nurse Manager works directly with the Manager to ensure safe, high quality patient care in an efficient and organized manner. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts responsibility for assigned areas under the direction of the Nurse Manager such as directing work for, approving schedule changes and overtime, managing employee performance and completing assigned performance appraisals. They ensure appropriate staffing needs are met, through scheduling and staffing. The Assistant Nurse Manager demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary for overseeing patient care activities in a fiscally sound manner and assures operational efficiency. The Assistant Nurse Manager works collaboratively with other departments to ensure quality patient care, satisfaction and a culture of safety while assuring a superior patient experience. The Assistant Nurse Manager facilitates shared decision-making initiatives, at the clinical, departmental, and system levels, resulting in a top decile outcomes in safety, patient experience & quality. The Assistant Nurse Manager functions in accordance with professional practice standards as set forth by the American Nurses Association, PA Nurse Practice Act, regulatory standards and MLH policies and procedures.
Human Resources/Management Development
Evaluates the performance of unit personnel. Provides ongoing feedback to staff and performs performance appraisals and makes recommendations for employee promotion, transfer and termination.
Gives positive feedback related to job performance to employees.
Responds to unacceptable behavior by addressing with staff member in a timely manner, reporting incident to Nurse Manager and documenting.
Assists the Clinical Educator with the scheduling of and orientation of new personnel.
Facilitates staff's attendance at required educational programs through effective scheduling.
Assists in the completion of payroll including correction of errors, tracking benefit balance and ensuring leaves of absence input by staffing office.
Promotes the annual unit(s) goals, utilizing a participative approach. Assists in assuring implementation and evaluation of these goals
Supports a system of communication and collaboration with other department managers to resolve interdepartmental issues/concerns to support the development of new programs and to meet the overall missions, vision and goals of the organization.
Acts as a liaison and effectively interacts with physicians, staff, patients and significant others.
Serves as a resource person and role model to all staff members.
Contributes to patient care through membership and active participation on departmental, medical and hospital committees as the unit representative.
Represents PCM in his/her absence.
Participates with staff in the development and implementation of standards of practice/care for designated unit(s).
Monitors nursing performance and practice, taking corrective action to ensure adherence to standards.
Enforces and maintains standards by making patient rounds on a regular basis.
Supports the quality improvement process including monthly QI indicators, patient satisfaction and employee satisfaction programs.
Responds to emergency situations and takes action based on system/hospital protocols.
Prioritizes responsibilities centered around the needs of the patient, managing time to achieve maximum productivity.
Promotes environmental safety for patients and personnel by interpreting their needs and assuring these are met.
Interviews and selects applicants for unit staffing positions.
Prepares staffing schedules for respective units, communicating requests for changes as approved (8 week time blocks).
Exercises discretion and adjusts staffing levels relative to patient flow and collaborates with staffing office.
Makes schedule changes and determines the needs for additional staff/ overtime. Responsible to approve and schedule overtime.
Mentors, supports and facilitates charge nurse to successfully coordinate patient care operations.
Assigns staff according to patient needs based on expertise, experience and skill level according to policy.
Ensure the completion of daily staffing including the assignment and delegation of unit requirements such as charge nurse functions including narcotic counts, code cart checks and other quality assurance requirements.
Initiates and updates scheduling records including holiday requirements, down staffing lists and weekend patterns and assures staff meet minimum scheduling requirements.
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
BSN or other related Bachelor's Degree required; MSN or other related Master's Degree preferred.
Ability to communicate proficiently in English to perform job duties.
Licensures & Certifications :
A current PA RN license.
Maintains validation of current BLS training (CPR).
Certification in specialty area desired.
BSN or MSN required
Unit-specific. Prior charge nurse experience or other related leadership experience preferred. Three to five years clinical experience in area of responsibility preferred.
