Assistant Nurse Manager Emergency Department

The Assistant Nurse Manager Emergency Department will:

  • Quality

  • Responsible for Nursing Quality Improvements activities on the unit.

  • Coordinate with staff in collecting data for unit specific quality indicators.

  • Facilitate and provide input to Performance Improvement (PI) representative for the quarterly PI report.

  • Create action plans; implement and monitor action plans based on quality data.

  • Participate in design and implementation of needed unit changes based on QI results.

  • Assist the Nurse Manager in planning for and implementing mechanisms to encourage growth and development of staff.

  • Identify and communicate staff's learning needs and refer to Clinical Education & Nursing Research.

  • Assign staff to attend in-services and educational programs.

  • Serve as resource person/mentor to staff.

  • Provide other essential functions as directed by the Nurse Manager.

  • Provide input and assistance in the development of policies and procedures.

  • Participate on hospital committees.

  • Actively participate in preparation for review by regulatory agencies.

  • Participate in maintaining continued survey readiness

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care activities considering growth and development factors appropriate to age in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. Consistently uses research-based/evidence-based resources, where available, to assess plan and implement care.

  • Report any significant changes in the condition of the unit, any incidents and/or personnel problems.

  • Ensure that changes in patient condition are communicated to the appropriate Medical Staff as well as to the Nurse Manager/Shift Supervisor when needed.

  • Communicate to the Nurse Manager/Shift Supervisor any unit activity that affects delivery of patient care during the shift.

  • Communicate, identify and address any personnel problems requiring immediate action in collaboration with the Nurse Manager/Shift Supervisor.

  • Participate in unit based research.

  • Function as staff as needed to maintain patient safety and quality.

  • Service

  • Actively promote customer satisfaction and a positive work environment.

  • Hold staff accountable to mission excellence standards.

  • Work to create a team approach within and between assigned units.

  • Identify and recommend opportunities to improve physician satisfaction. Collaborate with nurse manager to implement changes on the unit.

  • Conduct daily patient rounds on assigned unit.

  • Identify patient/family concerns and takes appropriate steps to provide service recovery if needed.

  • Ensure staffs are conducting hourly rounds and creates weekly rounding report.

  • People

  • Coordinate monthly staff meetings in collaboration with nurse manager; encourage open communication of unit specific issues.

  • Work with Nurse Manager and staff to address/implement improvements.

  • Effectively plan and set priorities on a daily basis.

  • Remain knowledgeable of patient status/needs.

  • Provide appropriate coordination of activities between all assigned units

  • Monitor staffing for assigned unit and consult with the clinical coordinator, nurse manager and/or staffing coordinator to ensure appropriate staffing levels each shift.

  • Review schedule and inputs into scheduling/timekeeping system.

  • Take steps to expedite patient movement.

  • Review employee time records, approves and signs off.

  • Participate in unit orientation of new and/or float/agency employees.

  • Match new employee with preceptor when needed.

  • Review and assist in completion of newly hired employees' competency check.

  • Attend weekly orientation review.

  • Work in collaboration with nurse manager in completing and providing input for annual performance appraisals.

  • Conduct employee rounds; identify trends, communicate trends to nurse manager, and implement actions to address trends identified. Reviews employee satisfaction survey; provide input to nurse manager in the development of actions plans.

  • Supportive to staff on all unit projects and unit based committees.

  • Finance

  • Work with the clinical staff to prioritize the capital needs of the unit and provide input to Nurse Manager regarding acquisition of capital equipment.

  • Growth

  • Develop and implement new programs and/or process changes to positively impact the patient experience.

  • Attend conferences, seminar, utilizes reference material. Participate and promote the opportunity for nursing staff to attend and participate in continuing education and research programs.

  • Maintain current membership in professional association.

Requirements:

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in specialty preferred

  • Supervisory experience desired, which may include prior charge nurse, committee leadership, etc.

  • BLS Certification required, as approved by the American Heart Association

  • National certification or nursing administrative certification within one year in specialty specific to care provided

  • PALS, ACLS as required by specialty.

  • ECG Course

  • Critical Care Course (within 6 mos of hire)
