Assistant News Director
I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.WNEM, a Meredith Corporation TV station in Saginaw, MI, is seeking a creative, passionate, hands-on Assistant News Director with strong leadership skills.
This candidate will work closely with the News Director on executing overall strategy of the newsroom, and growth of people and product across all platforms. The Assistant News Director must be able to drive daily content, own the big stories, breaking news and enterprise news content on air, online and on social media. This person must have an emphasis on creative storytelling, innovation and a digital first approach.
The Assistant News Director plays a critical role in story development with producers/ reporters and reviews scripts for accuracy, legal issues, content, value, relevance, grammar and overall direction. This role is also actively involved in recruiting newsroom personnel and training efforts, along with the performance review process. This position actively engages in putting content on the web and helps direct the newsroom to support a multi-platform environment.
II. Essential Job Functions
Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results
Supervises newsroom operations. Reviews scripts/editorial content, works with newsroom assets and other departments.
Performs administrative functions; coordinating schedules; approves time sheets; coordinates coverage plan for big events.
Assists with news strategy planning and breaking news coverage.
III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Broadcasting, Journalism or equivalent training and/or experience.
Minimum of two years' experience as an Executive Producer and/or Assistant New Director. Must possess previous show and writing experience.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong journalism, broadcast, news writing and digital skills
Carry out strategies to increase ratings and performance in all news shows
Ability to look for new creative ways to choreograph newscasts, showcase coverage and engage with the audience.
Lead aggressive breaking news and weather coverage
Assist with copy editing of scripts
Collaborate with News Director on hiring and coaching of staff
Strong project management skills
Participate in post-show meetings and constructively troubleshoot issues that arise
Work with all WNEM departments on station-sponsored and community events
Ability to maintain confidential information
Must possess a network in the industry to identify up and coming talent
Help coordinate training for staff development
Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
Willingness and ability to work long hours, late nights and weekends when required
Performs other duties as assigned
