POSITION SUMMARY:

This position performs supervisory and administrative duties in assisting the department head in overseeing the maintenance and repairs of company vehicle and container handling equipment fleet. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Required

  • Four (4) years of experience in maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of heavy equipment (diesel, gas, and propane engines).

  • Two (2) years of fleet management experience to include overseeing a preventative maintenance program, repairing, and maintaining (diesel, gas, and propane engines) and hydraulic / electrical systems.

  • Knowledge of heavy equipment, the manufacturers' warranty process, and the work order / time spent accounting process.

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic's trade.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, coaching, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Time and project management skills.

  • Ability to analyze processes and information, identify problems and trends, and develop effective solutions and strategies.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled employees engaged in repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in English, at an intermediate level.

  • Ability to coordinate programs, prepare reports and maintain accurate records.

  • Ability to work independently, extended hours, weekends and holidays as needed.

  • High school or GED equivalent.

  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of an automated Fleet Management Information System.

  • Knowledge of Liebherr Mobile Harbor Cranes and Taylor Container Handling Equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Responsible for the maintenance, repair and replacement of all vehicles and equipment assigned to the different departments of the company.

  • Assist the department head in developing, implementing and monitoring a scheduled Preventative Maintenance Program to assure cost effective maintenance as determined by equipment manufacturers' specifications, manuals or otherwise to ensure proper turn around on equipment being repaired, and a program that will provide cost effective replacement of vehicles.

  • Review all job orders to ensure mechanics are performing all proper work, add, if need be, items for repair and have ability to decide if any needed job(s) need to be outsourced.

  • Review the complete fleet services program every six months to ensure that the most current repair procedures are being used by the fleet service mechanics. This will include an analysis of the shop tools, electronic equipment and any shop equipment used are the proper tools and are in good working order.

  • Support the department's quality control program.

  • Assist in maintaining a mechanic training and certification program to provide needed technical skills for mechanics in repair of automotive and heavy equipment.

  • Establish proper working procedures, guidance and direction to all mechanics ensuring proper personnel are performing required maintenance and repairs in accordance with their skill and ability.

  • Supervision and review of employees to determine promotions, merit ratings and disciplinary actions.

  • Follow management guidelines for proper record keeping.

  • Create a clean and efficient workplace environment.

  • Ensure terminal daily operation is adequately supported with the required assets such as: cranes in position, top-loaders, mules, and forklifts.

  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The employee is continuously required to walk, talk and hear.

  • The employee is frequently required to sit and stand.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • The employee must occasionally use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch, or craw; and smell.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Report safety hazards.

  • Wear appropriate PPE as instructed by immediate supervisor.

  • Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules.

  • Not accept any unsafe task or operation.

  • Participate in safety meetings and training.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from the Power Shop Manager and indirect supervision from the Vice President of Terminal Operations. May assist mechanics in the performance of their functions. Does exercise supervision over the Power Shop Department.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles; exposed to changing weather (temperature & humidity) and outdoor environments, during day and night shifts.

  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.

  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • May be required to work on holidays and weekends as necessary.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to noisy.
