Position Summary

Assist in the oversight of facility-wide husbandry operation activities to ensure efficient and effective performance as directed by the Facility Manager. Responsible for confirming adherence to DCM Standard Operating Procedures, Animal Welfare Regulations, IACUC policies, and quality care for animals. Participates in ensuring that all standard operating procedures are current and accurate and that occupational safety procedures are observed. This position reports to the Facility Manager and performs duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Job Description

This position requires the ability to provide weekend, after hours, and holiday coverage on a rotational basis, including oversight of weekend/holiday staff. The normal shift for this position may include Saturdays or Sundays on a regular basis.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise the daily activities of Husbandry Operations. Provide quality control checks to ensure proper practices are followed and provide training to maintain compliance. Communicate effectively with DCM leadership, research technicians, animal users, principal investigators/faculty, Facilities Maintenance, and EHS to assure safe and smooth operation.

  • Manage up to forty direct and indirect reports. Participate in decisions regarding recruitment, evaluation, development, and termination of employees. Serve as a rotating member on the recruiting team. Oversee caretaker work schedules to ensure adequate coverage.

  • Coordinate the collection of husbandry and animal care data (e.g. census and log sheets). Assist in the assessment of staffing levels. Conduct time and motion studies and share data with Manager and DCM leadership to help make decisions regarding staffing levels and operational changes.

  • Assist in coordination of facility orders and verify that receipt and delivery of animals is properly performed. Provide oversight for receiving including equipment and gas delivery and pick up. Oversee animal transfer process.

  • Validate that animal care staff are appropriately trained on all husbandry procedures. Identifies staff training needs in coordination with the Facility Supervisors, Facility Manager, and DCM training team. Assists and follow up with in-facility training of new hires after boot camp.

  • Oversee or participate in special projects such as facility renovations. Monitors the progress toward the fulfillment of established goals and objectives utilizing measurement standards.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AALAS certification as Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG).

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Four years of experience in laboratory animal care.

  • Four years of supervisory experience.

  • Strong leadership and effective communication skills, verbal and written, including demonstrated supervisory experience and the capacity to function in a results-oriented environment while setting high-performance standards for employees.

  • Ability to comprehend written and spoken English terms used in a biomedical research environment.

  • Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions from veterinary, supervisory and research staff.

  • Display a conscientious attitude, integrity and concern for quality.

  • Communicate effectively and demonstrate leadership abilities understanding of regulations regarding research animals and safety.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work for themselves and their staff.

  • Knowledgeable of various computer programs (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook) and institutional software.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certificate

  • Five years of relevant experience with at least one year of relevant experience at the supervisory or managerial level

Salary Range

$47,000.00 - $85,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
