HFS provides on-campus housing and dining to over 7,800 student residents each year. In order to successfully accomplish this, we employ over 1,200 classified, professional staff and student staff members who work throughout HFS, providing residential and dining services to the campus, as well as additional campus services such as the Husky Card (the campus ID card), conferences and catering. HFS staff members support the University's focus on the undergraduate experience through many programs and servicesproviding students a smooth transition to living on their own. As the Assistant Manager (which is the equivalent to a Store Manager within the Starbucks Organization), you will be responsible for operating the licensed Starbucks store located in the University's Husky Union Building. This is a high-traffic location on campus. Consequently, the Starbucks store does a very high-volume of business, particularly at peak periods in the mornings and between classes, as students and staff seek their caffeine fix or a quick nibble between appointments. The Assistant Manager will supervise a team of 3 full-time staff and approximately 40 student staff in this kiosk-style venue. Candidates for this position need to be highly organized, customer oriented, and not afraid to work hard to provide the very best service and ensure the high standards of Starbucks and the UW are exceeded with every single customer interaction!

Key Responsibilities:


  • Ensures that staff deliver service that aligns with vision, values and priorities of the Department and Starbucks.

  • Promotes and ensures a culture that focuses on the practice of excellent customer service.

  • Supervises the work completed by direct reports, ensuring appropriate productivity, quality, customer service and adherence to UW and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Collaborates with Unit Manager to ensure that goals and objectives are implemented.

  • Maintains visibility and accessibility with customers, building managers and staff members (during meal period 90% on floor, 10% in office).

  • Monitors attendance and adjusts staffing to meet daily production needs.

  • Ensures that unit work complies with all contracts, policies and procedures applicable to the operation.

  • Interviews and selects staff, and ensures staff are on-boarded to the work unit and attend required HFS and UW required training.

  • Trains and monitors performance in unit safety, cash handling, customer service and food safety.

  • Provides guidance to direct report(s) on requirements and/or opportunities for learning and professional development.

  • Contributes to the preparation of ongoing and timely performance appraisals for all employees.

  • Consults appropriately with HFS Human Resources to ensure that UW, HFS and bargaining unit policies, guidelines are followed in administering progressive, corrective action principles and union contracts are followed in addressing employee performance problems.

  • Identifies and utilizes multiple venues for soliciting customer feedback and respond to complaints, questions and special requests.

  • Assist in monitoring compliance with established marketing standards and promotions, and take corrective action when necessary.

  • Effective presentation skills that demonstrate preparation, research and delivery that are scaled for small, large and diverse groups.

Operations and Customer Service

  • Leads staff on unit operation policies and procedures.

  • Contributes to the development of the business plan, processes, procedures and budget in collaboration with Food Services leadership.

  • Contributes to the management of the inventory from ordering to utilization, including purchasing, receipt, storage, production, display, sale and serves as primary contact for vendors.

  • Maintains proper controls over resources, including cash, inventory and labor.

  • Maintains quality control standards and measurement.

  • Co-conducts in-service training as needed on unit safety, cash handling, food safety, food preparation and/or customer service.

  • Identifies and corrects unsafe conditions; such as, poor equipment or work habits that might lead to an accident.

  • Orders routine maintenance.

  • Develops and maintains an ongoing cleaning schedule to ensure a consistent level of sanitation and cleanliness.

  • Schedules employees to ensure proper staffing levels are maintained to meet customer service standards.

  • Monitors employee attendance in payroll/timekeeping system to ensure accuracy and that unplanned overtime, absences and tardiness are minimized.

  • Ensures that displays, freezers and prep and storage areas are in clean and orderly condition and meet health department standards.

  • Establishes and ensures that inventory par levels are maintained to minimize waste; manage the documentation and disposal of waste.

  • Enforces policies and procedures for shrinkage control and loss prevention.

  • Maintains security measures to prevent theft and vandalism.

  • Contributes to the identification and recommended strategies for introducing, promoting and evaluating new product lines.

  • Prepares and submits required reports, including payroll, production and service records.

Fiscal Management

  • Uses Starbucks and HFS tools and resources to manage inventory and financial performance according to Starbucks specifications.

  • Uses CBord FSS to review daily sales, profit and loss, and other financial reports identifies sales and expense control opportunities, taking action as indicated.

  • Uses CBord FSS to analyze and monitor performance indicators for production, quality, service, menu costing and menu mix and intervenes when necessary to ensure goals are met.

  • Establish and maintain proper controls over resources, including cash, inventory and labor.

  • Ensures that there are appropriate controls on resources, including separation of controls between purchasing, receiving and counting inventory.

  • Develops and enforces policies and procedures for shrinkage control and loss prevention.


  • Oversee CBORD FSS functions performed as part of normal business operations, including purchasing, inventory, transfers and service menus. This position may be required to perform some tasks directly while reviewing or approving work delegated to staff.

  • Ensure unit staff are properly trained on using CBORD FSS system by referring them to Dining Systems for training, as well as providing ongoing guidance and feedback.

  • Use CBORD FSS reporting functions to monitor unit performance by reviewing key metrics related to purchasing, inventory, menu mix and costing. Notify Dining Systems of suspected errors or issues.


  • Participates in staff interviews and selecting staff. Ensures staff are on-boarded to the work unit and attend required HFS, UW and Starbucks required training.

  • Supports staffing schedules and adjusts staffing to meet daily production needs.

  • Trains staff on all phases of unit operations include food and beverage preparation and handling, compliance with recipes, customer service and use of systems and equipment.

  • Conducts in-service training as needed on unit safety, cash handling, food safety, food preparation and/or customer service.

  • Uses Workday to regularly review and approve individual employee time records and leave requests.

  • Ensures performance expectations and work rules are clearly communicated and reinforced through regular coaching, mentoring and regular staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in hospitality, business administration or related field.

  • Minimum of one year of management experience in the food service industry.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Project.

This position will typically work a Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. schedule. As this is a professional staff position, flexibility to meet the needs of the operation is necessary.

The salary range for this position is $4,200-4,500/month + benefits.
