I.

Purpose

To assist the Machine Operator in setting up, adjusting and operating a Converting bag machine that converts polyethylene plastic film to bags for customer packaging needs. The Assistant works with an Operator who share in duties.

II.

Duties

Obtains job information from off-going Assistant Machine Operator at the start of the shift to help keep machine running, and checks machine to be sure area is clean. Completes machine cards, quality check sheets, GB checks, perforation checks and other special quality checks and attach to the Converting order copy. Reads entire order carefully and thoroughly. Checks for any special instructions and questions anything that is unclear. Makes correct boxes. Assists the Operator to maintain supplies at the machine and clears the area of all unused cartons, supplies, formers, etc. Assists in inventories when assigned. Changes rolls, and assists in making setups and asks Machine Operator for assistance if any difficulty adjusting machine. Completes quality check sheet per instructions on top of sheet. Checks bags for proper size, print location, seal strength, appearance of seals and slits, location and number of vents, any special packs and put-ups, pulls or slits caused by machine problems, perforations and ensures that special manufacturing instructions are being followed. Pulls samples as required on all orders. Checks machine for defects and reports damaged or worn out equipment to Crew Leader and completes service request. Cleans cores, removes all tape and places cores in appropriate bins. Labels and stacks full cartons on skids. When order is complete Converting order copy, check sheets and all other paperwork is placed in box with retain samples. Each Assistant Machine Operator is responsible for the proper use and condition of tools or any tools that are lost. Keeps records as required. Passes job information on to incoming shift Assistant Machine Operator at machine site. Maintains a clean, safe work area by following all department cleaning standards (CIL) and plant safety rules. Maintains self and work area to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices and other prerequisite food safety programs. Assists in the training of new or inexperienced Assistant Machine Operators. All other duties as assigned by Crew Leader or Management.

Requirements

  • Good computer skills

  • Ability to work with and interact effectively and professionally with coworkers in a team environment

  • Good math skills

  • Must be able to identify the source of problems on complex machinery, and, if noted, take the appropriate corrective action

  • Must be able to read, understand and stay current with all department work instructions and procedures

  • Good organizational skills

Sources

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of experience in converting and/or a manufacturing environment.

IV.

Contacts
1.

Internal

  • Has daily contact with Converting Department Crew Leaders, hourly production personnel, maintenance, production department management personnel.Must be able to interact with various plant personnel to ensure that supplies are available and orders are ready to run as scheduled.

External

  • Occasional contact with customers during customer visits.

V.

Responsibility

  • While there is no direct responsibility for major assets or operations in this position, a considerable impact can be made on production, efficiency and waste through effective handling of materials, products, equipment and inventory control.

  • Must be able to communicate with coworkers and Crew Leaders

  • Must pass company administered color vision test

  • Must be able to maintain regular attendance
