The city of Bessemer is seeking an Assistant Golf Professional to assist the Head Golf Professional with the oversight, upkeep, maintenance, and inventory for the golf course, golf shop, clubhouse, and on-site restaurant. This individual interacts with the community (i.e., schools, youth programs, local businesses) to promote the course, tournaments, and event space availability. The Assistant Golf Professional assists with the budget by providing input on golf shop inventory, pricing, and monitoring expenditure information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Driver's license.

  • Experience working in a golf setting (e.g., golf course, clubhouse, driving range) handling daily operations related duties (e.g., customer service, scheduling tee times, pro-shop merchandizing, providing lessons).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to invite to participate in subsequent selection processes.

  • Proof of a passed PGA Player Ability Test.

  • Class A PGA Member or working toward completing PGA membership requirements.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Supervises staff by planning, assigning, and reviewing work, ensuring rules are being enforced, and providing training.

  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental budget by reviewing spending trends and expenditure reports, consulting with personnel, analyzing financial data, and presenting an annual budget based on financial data and department needs to ensure that expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.

  • Performs public/community relations activities such as interacting with schools, youth programs, and golf lessons to promote the golf course to local businesses, organizations, groups and individuals.

  • Offers and conducts private golf lessons for course patrons by teaching equipment selection, strategy, and golf skill instruction.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:

  • Knowledge of golf rules, regulations and techniques as needed to instruct, coach or officiate.

  • Knowledge of basic inventory security protocols (e.g., restricted access, secure storage).

  • Knowledge of computer fundamentals and software, including database, spreadsheet, and word processing software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily in employer-owned golf courses and facilities. Work involves the use of specialized tools for golf instruction. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
