Healthcare Regulatory Attorney

Virtua Health, the largest healthcare system in Southern New Jersey, has an opportunity for a healthcare regulatory attorney with 7-10 years of substantive experience in providing healthcare regulatory and compliance advice and counsel.

This is a high profile role that will, among other things, provide legal support in healthcare regulatory matters and transactions to Virtua's hospitals, employed physicians network, compliance department, and joint ventures.

Law firm and in-depth experience in advising clients on Fraud and Abuse, Stark, Medicare reimbursement, hospital-physician relationships, physician compensation arrangements, and provider-payor relationships is required.

This AVP & Assistant General Counsel position will report to Virtua's General Counsel and will be strategically aligned to work directly with Virtua leaders to provide effective legal support. Applications will not be accepted by email

Job Summary:

Reporting directly to the SVP & General Counsel, serves as strategic legal advisor to Virtua leaders throughout the organization and provides legal advice and counsel in support of a variety of areas as assigned, such as health law and compliance, healthcare transactions, HIPAA/privacy, employment and labor law, contract negotiations and review, patient care/hospital law matters, and litigation. Engages and manages outside counsel in accordance with Legal Department practices and procedures; works with outside counsel to provide legal services to Virtua; and otherwise works with outside counsel in accordance with the organization's legal, business and financial objectives.

Provides legal advice and counsel in certain substantive legal areas, as assigned, and otherwise to support internal clients, including but not limited to healthcare law and compliance, transactions, patient care/hospital law, HIPAA/privacy, employment and labor law, litigation and administrative agency charges, labor arbitrations, etc..

Contract negotiations, preparation and review

Attend Virtua business, strategic and other meetings to provide the necessary legal support to clients throughout the System and otherwise as required.

Participate in rotating patient care on-call coverage for Virtua's hospitals, and its other entities as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications Required:

Required Experience:
7-10 years of substantive experience in providing healthcare regulatory and compliance advice and counsel.

Required Education:

Juris Doctorate

Training / Licensure:

Licensed to practice in New Jersey, or can be admitted to practice as in-house counsel in New Jersey. Must currently be a member of good standing in a U.S. State Bar without any disciplinary history and no encumbrances to being licensed to practice law in New Jersey.

Accountable for data integrity of hospital contract management system. Supports value based contract reconciliations and oversight of partial and full risk contracts. * Job Description Serves as liaison to Contract Management Administrator in the interpretation, implementation, and verification of contract packages to ensure proper pricing and collection of expected contract revenues. Audits contract management calculations. Maintains mid-cycle checklist. Confirms annual contract rate increases and/or rate load with payers. Prepares and processes Contract Management Reports as required. Supports process improvement efforts of internal and external customers by providing detailed root cause analysis. Analyzes payer data related to value based contracts to include leakage (keepage) analysis and shared savings reconciliations in collaboration with VPP analytics. Prepares financial models for contract renewal. Measures mid-cycle contract financial performance and compliance. Evaluates alternative payment methodologies.
