Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling and support for human resources and recruiting organizations, as well as general employment law support, including:

  • Provide advice and strategic support to HR Business Partners, Employee Relations Partners, and business leaders on employee terminations, performance management, investigations, accommodations, reorganizations, and other employment-related matters

  • Collaborate with other attorneys on the team with respect to advice and counseling provided to HR and other cross-functional partners

  • Coordinate and drive completion of employment related projects, including internal process reviews, new policy roll-outs and implementation and training programs

  • Draft and edit employment related documents, correspondence, agreements and processes

  • Develop creative approaches to managing legal risks and resolving disputes

  • Manage and drive strategy on pre-litigation and litigation matters

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one U.S. state bar

  • 5+ years of experience in labor and employment law, in-house experience preferred

  • Experience with state and federal employment law and advising and counseling clients on such laws

  • Employment litigation experience and experience coordinating and driving projects to completion (including litigations)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • North Carolina Bar membership

  • Experience with California employment law

The legal team at Nuveen provides advice and guidance in support of Nuveen's asset management activities. Nuveen is the asset management subsidiary of the TIAA organization, with over $900 billion in assets under management. Nuveen manages investments on a global scale in the equities, fixed income and alternatives space, and Nuveen is primarily responsible for asset management product development, product management and solutions for the TIAA organization. Nuveen also leads and supports strategic enterprise-wide projects within the TIAA organization. Primary focus is transactional tax advice but position responsibilities will include advising on tax issues relating to new product development. Transaction advice will cover a full range of tax issues arising from domestic and international investments, including real estate equity investments and joint ventures, fixed income and private equity, as well as alternatives investments. Attorney will be responsible for coordinating with lawyers, corporate tax professionals, accountants and domestic and international tax advisors and must be able to effectively communicate complex tax issues to the business clients and management, including preparations of written materials. The selected individual will work out of the Charlotte office, supporting the investment teams primarily located in New York and Charlotte. The attorney will join a team of in-house lawyers supporting in New York, Chicago, Charlotte and Newport Beach. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: * Provide in house tax legal services to the investment operations of Nuveen Asset Management. This position will provide tax legal support to a wide variety of domestic and international investment activity including commercial real estate, including joint ventures, complex portfolios and separate mandates, commercial mortgages, privately placed corporate debt, private equity funds, mezzanine investments, certain high yield transactions, real estate funds, and a focus on real assets that include agriculture, timber, energy, oil & gas, and infrastructure. * Structuring advice. * Ability to work collaboratively with transactional team but must also be able to independently direct tax planning. * Negotiation, review and analysis of legal agreements, including contracts, joint venture agreements, financing and offering documents. * Conducting or supervising legal tax due diligence, supervising outside counsel and coordinating with tax and other consultants. * Work closely within a business team, understand business strategies and coordinate with multiple disciplines, including accounting, audit, tax, compliance and risk. Qualifications: Required: * JD degree from an ABA accredited law school and member in good standing of a state bar * 5+ years experience as tax counsel in the tax practice at a major law firm or company * Experience in both domestic and international tax planning, as well as corporate taxation. * Experience with tax legal work supporting aspects of asset management/investing such as commercial real estate investing including acquisitions, joint ventures, sales, privately placed corporate debt, private equity funds, mezzanine investments, certain high yield transactions, real estate funds, or a focus on real assets that include agriculture, timber, energy, oil & gas, and infrastructure.
