ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH

VSC-UP PAT BARGAINING UNIT, GRADE 12, EXEMPT

BASIC FUNCTION

To assist the head football coach and oversee in one or more areas within the Athletics and Recreation Department.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To assist the head coach with managing the daily operations of a Division III intercollegiate football program under the guidelines established by Vermont State University and the NCAA.

  • Responsibilities include, but not limited to, practice and game preparation, recruitment and retention of qualified student-athletes, overseeing the academic success and student-athlete welfare.

  • This coaching appointment would coach their own position group on the defensive side of the ball and be responsible for a recruiting area within the northeast.

  • Assist in game management for various athletic events and contests.

  • Perform other administrative duties within the Athletics and Recreation Department as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from the Director of Athletics.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

General supervision over student workers, and student interns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in sports administration, recreation, physical education, or other appropriate discipline with a master's degree desirable, plus two to four years relevant experience in coaching, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • Background as an offensive coach is essential.

  • Broad base of knowledge and skills related to athletic facilities, management, coaching, recruiting and other relevant experience.

  • Two to four years of prior coaching experience.

  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of University students, personnel, as well as media contacts, facilities users and others outside the University.

  • Weekend and evening work are required.

  • Valid Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

  • Ability to deal effectively with students, college personnel, as well as professional NCAA compliance network and others outside of the university.

  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.

  • Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.

Skills:

  • Knowledge, interest, and skills related to athletic facilities, management, coaching, recruiting and other relevant experience.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as SSE, Colleague, Self-Service, Slate, Microsoft products, and Perceptive Content.

  • Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.

Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development, such as communication skills, leadership skills, academic skills, technical skills, non-cognitive or 'soft' skills, and social skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals, such as academic purpose, sense of belonging/identity, agency, career readiness, civic readiness, access & equity.

  • Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as external stakeholders in carrying out the various coordination, liaison, and other aspects of the job.

  • Ability to work weekends and evenings.
