  •  Fleet Technician

Assistant Fleet Technician positions lubricate, fuel, and service motive, industrial, and construction equipment; make minor repairs, parts replacements, and adjustments; order, build, install, inspect, repair, and replace tires; service and replace batteries; may assist in heavy equipment repair; drive and operate a fuel truck; perform tire repair road calls; occasionally perform tire standby service; keep service records; perform preventive maintenance inspections; perform daily Underground Storage Tank (UST)/Hazmat inspections and document findings; prepare basic reports; perform simple mathematical calculations; keep up to date on current enhancements in the field of Automotive Technology; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

  • 4% effective 7/1/24 

  • 2% effective 1/1/25 

  • 5% effective 7/1/25  

  • In addition to the scheduled general wage increases, the following special salary wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for Assistant Fleet Technician:

  • 5% effective 1/1/25

  • 5% effective 1/1/26

  • Assistant Fleet Technician employees may be required to work an extended period of night or unusual shift work for which they may receive 5% additional pay.

  • Assistant Fleet Technician employees who possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications may be eligible to receive additional pay.

  • Assistant Fleet Technician employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Prior to hire, a background check will be completed in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and with former employers regarding drug and alcohol testing results.

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:

  • Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or Auto Mechanics AND one year of full-time motive service work experience.

  • Successful completion of a minimum of 600 hours of an accredited Automotive Service Training Program AND one year of full-time motive service work experience.

  • Two years of full-time motive service work experience.

NOTES:

  • Motive service work experience must include ALL of the following: Tire and battery servicing, vehicle lubrication, minor vehicle repair, and general maintenance on cars, trucks, or heavy equipment.

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

NOTE:

  • Some Assistant Fleet Technician positions may require a valid California Class B Driver License with Hazardous Materials and Tank Endorsements within nine months from date of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Possession of a valid California Class A Driver License.

  • Computer-related experience as it relates to equipment maintenance programs.

  • Applicable Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in Automotive, Light Truck or Medium/Heavy Truck.

All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
