Assistant Fire Marshal

Description

This class reports to the Fire Marshal of the department and operates within the fire marshal division of Dorchester County Fire Rescue. This class works within general policy and organizational guidelines and does independent planning and implementation, reporting progress of major activities through periodic conferences and meetings.

Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Conducts fire/life safety code inspections of existing occupancies as directed by the Fire Marshal in conjunction with other state and local agencies. Prepares reports of findings and explains fire/life safety codes and standards.

Conducts field inspections of existing occupancies on an annual or as needed basis as determined by the supervisor. Prepares reports of findings and issues violation notices as required. Receives and responds to complaints of code violations; conducts field inspections to verify and determine the nature of violations; and prepares and issues violation notices as required.

Provides information to interested parties concerning fire/life safety codes and standards; confers with and assists departmental officials in the interpretation and application of fire/life safety codes.

Maintains records of field inspection activities; completes reports of inspected occupancies and all incidental enforcement work; and submits reports to supervisors.

Conducts public education presentations, fire drills and evaluates evacuation plans.

Attends quarterly Fire Marshal in-service training.

Responds with Fire Operations to various emergency calls to assist the Fire Companies of the county.

Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Associate degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and training.

Requires at least five (5) years of work experience as a firefighter or equivalent work experience.

Special Qualifications:

Must possess a current Fire Inspector Certification.

Must have a valid state Class E, Class B CDL or equivalent driver's license.

Preferred Certifications:

International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) Fire Instructor I or equivalent; IFSAC Firefighter II or equivalent; South Carolina Fire Academy (SCFA) Pump Operator I or equivalent; SCFA Auto Extrication or equivalent; Hazardous Materials Operations Level; National Incident Management System (NIMS-ICS) Incident Command training or equivalent including Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 300, and 400 as well as IS 700 and 800; and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) First Aid or greater.

Must obtain within one (1) year of hire: Fire and Life Safety Educator certification; IFSAC Fire Officer I or equivalent; and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
