The purpose of this job is to perform advanced supervisory and administrative work overseeing the activities of assigned divisions within the Fire Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supports the Chief in the execution of department strategic plans, implementation of department-wide initiatives, and direction of operational activities; coordinates major projects and continuous quality improvement activities.
Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring, and discipline of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries; and acts as liaison between employees and management.
Manages day-to-day operation of divisions operating within department, through communication and collaboration with subordinate staff.
Assists in preparation of the annual department budget and reports, as assigned.
Participates in and assists with development and implementation of departmental policies, goals, and procedures.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
YOU MUST BE A CITY OF COLUMBIA EMPLOYEE HAVING SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PROBATIONARY PERIOD.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent, Associate or higher degree preferred.
Minimum ten years in a command-level position, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
Knowledge of:
Fire codes and regulations.
Fire suppression and first responder methods, practices, and techniques.
Fire suppression and emergency response equipment operation and maintenance.
Safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment and fire suppression and first responder activities.
General office practices and administrative procedures, records management and administration techniques and procedures
Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and/or production methods.
Skill in:
Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.
Applying active listening and asking questions for understanding.
Training, supervising, monitoring, and assessing the performance of employees or to make improvements or take corrective action.
Ability to:
Manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.

Hours/Days
Generally Monday through Friday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Occasional special assignments will fall outside normal business hours.
