The purpose of this job is to perform advanced supervisory and administrative work overseeing the activities of assigned divisions within the Fire Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description
  • Supports the Chief in the execution of department strategic plans, implementation of department-wide initiatives, and direction of operational activities; coordinates major projects and continuous quality improvement activities.

  • Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring, and discipline of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries; and acts as liaison between employees and management.

  • Manages day-to-day operation of divisions operating within department, through communication and collaboration with subordinate staff.

  • Assists in preparation of the annual department budget and reports, as assigned.

  • Participates in and assists with development and implementation of departmental policies, goals, and procedures.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Work requires managing and monitoring work performance by directing multiple groups of employees across more than one business function, including making decisions on hiring, disciplinary actions, evaluating program/work objectives and effectiveness, conducting performance evaluations, and realigning work and staffing assignments, as needed.

Education and Experience

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

YOU MUST BE A CITY OF COLUMBIA EMPLOYEE HAVING SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PROBATIONARY PERIOD.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent, Associate or higher degree preferred.

  • Minimum ten years in a command-level position, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, CPR certification, and EMT license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

  • Fire codes and regulations.

  • Fire suppression and first responder methods, practices, and techniques.

  • Fire suppression and emergency response equipment operation and maintenance.

  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment and fire suppression and first responder activities.

  • General office practices and administrative procedures, records management and administration techniques and procedures

  • Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and/or production methods.

Skill in:

  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

  • Applying active listening and asking questions for understanding.

  • Training, supervising, monitoring, and assessing the performance of employees or to make improvements or take corrective action.

Ability to:

  • Manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.

Hours/Days

Generally Monday through Friday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Occasional special assignments will fall outside normal business hours.
