Assistant Fire Chief
Salary Range: $71,552 to $100,664

NATURE OF WORK
Responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the fire department through the development, coordination, direction, and administration of operational activities pertaining to the functions of Fire/Rescue and Emergency Medical Services. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, researching, developing programs/curriculums and/or conducting the training activities of the department for all staff and working to procedurally integrate technological advances into the department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
Responsible for assisting in the daily operations of the fire department through the development, coordination, direction and administration of operational activities pertaining to all fire/rescue and EMS functions
Serves as the department training officer for EMS and fire/rescue activities. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, researching, developing programs/curriculums and/or conducting the training activities of the department for all staff; maintains detailed personnel training records
Insures that all personnel meet State of Nebraska and NREMT certification requirements; meet compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances as they pertain to all operations; serves as the HIPAA Compliance Officer
Assists the Fire Chief in the development, evaluation and maintenance of departmental rules, regulations, goals, objectives, and policies; insures that all staff personnel adhere to departmental directives at all times
Assists with the departmental budget
Serves as the City's Emergency Manager
Receives citizen's complaints and handles situations and/or refers individuals to appropriate city officials for resolution
Attends regional, state, and local conferences, convections, and meetings
Respond to fire and rescue/EMS calls
Performs the duties of the Fire Chief in his/her absence
Performs other related duties as required by the Fire Chief.
EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Emergency Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or Education or related discipline from an accredited college or university. A combination of education and experience may be considered equivalent, subject to review by the City.
Must have at least ten (10) years of experience as a full-time member in a career or combination fire department providing firefighting and EMS services.
Must have at least three (3) years of supervisory experience in a Fire and EMS system.
Extensive knowledge on modern fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services, principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must have and maintain a valid driver's license
State of Nebraska license and/or NREMT as a Paramedic
NREMT Paramedic would be required to obtain Nebraska Paramedic license prior to date of hire.
State certification as a Fire Fighter I
Non-Nebraska certifications would require Nebraska certification within six months of employment.
State certification as a Fire Fighter II
Non-Nebraska certifications would require Nebraska certification within six months of employment.
State certification as Hazardous Material Operations
Non-Nebraska certifications would require Nebraska certification within six months of employment.
State certification as a Fire Instructor I
Non-Nebraska certifications would require Nebraska certification within six months of employment.
Must obtain IFSAC/ProBoard Fire Instructor II certification within one year of employment.
Must obtain the NEMA Emergency Manager Basic Academy Certification within one year of employment.
Application Instructions and Schedule:
Selection Process - All candidates must be available for the following:
Assessment Center and testing dates. Eligible candidates will participate in a variety of testing and activities to evaluate their qualifications for this position. Some activities may be completed remotely, while others will require on-site attendance. All candidates will be contacted after May 15, 2024 with an updated schedule, final dates are currently pending.
Candidates must be available to be on site on June 25, 2024 for in-person assessments.
Candidates that successfully complete the above testing will be scheduled for a Chief's interview. You will be notified of your interview date and time following the successful completion of onsite assessments.
Additional interviews will be conducted by the Civil Service Commission at a later date.
Candidates must be available for all scheduled hiring activities to be considered. We will attempt to work with scheduling conflicts, but alternative dates or times may not be available.
