MISSION:

JOB PURPOSE:

Under limited supervision of the Facility Administrator; plans, coordinates, and directs the management of the Juvenile Detention Center. Ensures that the facility's operations are consistent with all applicable State Laws and Regulations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists the Facility Administrator in planning, directing, and supervising the operation of the facility for the Juvenile Detention Center.

Assists in managing the hiring process by serving on interview panels.

Monitors the living units for high-risk youths in need of intensive services and supervision.

Monitors and evaluates the incentive living units for youths displaying positive behavior and ensures youths are maintained in the least restrictive environment required for safety and security.

Ensures proper security and a safe environment for the supervision of youths are maintained.

Ensures staff and youths have the necessary equipment/supplies essential to their daily functions.

Monitors and evaluates work performance of staff, counsels' staff as needed, and conducts a quarterly climate meeting with staff to address concerns and issues.

Ensures that security officers maintain proper security certification and recommends training to maintain certification annually.

Assists in preparing and providing monthly facility reports as required to include quarterly inspection reports, weekly incident reports, use of force reports, and medical and segregation logs for the Deputy Director of Security and Operations.

Meets Performance based Standards (PbS) requirements.

Serves as the alternate on-call official for the facility and ensures the Deputy Director of Security and Operations and Associate Deputy Director of Security and Operations, are up to date on all events and incidents occurring at the facility.

Performs other related duties as directed by the Deputy Director of Security and Operations and as required to support the mission of the agency.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor's degree and supervisory experience in a correctional environment or relevant military experience. Relevant experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of residential therapeutic methods designed to rehabilitate youth offenders.

Knowledge of agency, state, and administrative policies and procedures relating to treatment and programs of youth offenders.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with necessary agencies, organizations, and interested public and private groups.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to provide technical assistance and supervision to correctional, treatment, education personnel in the performance of specific functional activities.

This position operates under the limited supervision and must be able to act independently.

The supervisor reviews work on a daily basis and monthly basis and performs annual performance evaluations.

Essential Position: Must be able to work any shift (day, evening, night, weekend, and/or holidays) and stay over if necessary. Work in locked quarters; must be willing and able to physically intervene with youth during conflicts, be mobile, and must be able to work around youth without restrictions.

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Salary may vary depending on experience and qualifications. Candidates must present documentation of their attainment of a college degree(s) at the time of the interview.

Documentation must be an official or unofficial copy of the college transcript or a Letter of Verification of Degree from the institution's Registrar's Office. If the candidate selected for the position provided an unofficial copy, it must be replaced with an official copy on or before the HR processing date.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of five (5) year of experience in a correctional setting to include three (3) years in a supervisory capacity and experience in a youth setting or equivalent. Must pass drug screen and be at least 21 years of age.

Special Requirement: Attends training and maintains certification required by Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE).
