Summary: Assists the Principal in the efficient operations of the school and works to ensure the safety and welfare of
all enrolled students and assigned staff. Provides administrative and instructional leadership to faculty and staff
through the development and oversight of assigned educational programs, school-related activities, and operational
services. Ensures a safe, and healthy social-emotional learning environment, effective educational atmosphere,
provides discipline as necessary, and enforces school policy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)
1.Participates in a distributed leadership model and provides operational leadership by:
a. Administering student-related processes that assures attendance, achievement, growth and development
including, but not limited to: student evaluation, standardized testing, conduct and discipline, student
assignments to classes, and the maintenance and transfer of records.
b. Supporting professional development, programs, and curriculum development
c. Developing and/or using current data to assess and inform student learning, instructional practices, identify
school resource needs, and school improvement initiatives.
d. Under the direction of the Principal, collaborating with administration at the middle and high school levels to
ensure the proper development and implementation of personal learning plans (PLPs).
e. Coordinating with the Principal and the Executive Director of Learning to establish teaching schedules and
an annual schedule of events including, but not limited to: student assessments, staff professional
development activities, and the school calendar.
f. Developing and maintaining appropriate assignments for non-teaching duties to educators and support staff.
g. Implementing policy and procedure changes as mandated by State and/or Federal regulations and as
directed by the Principal
h. Updating and publishing staff and student handbooks, school-related publications, and website content.
i. Assisting in the preparation of the school budget; monitoring expenditures in assigned areas to ensure
efficacy and a direct link to the educational goals of the district.
j. Assisting in interviewing and recommending prospective teachers and staff members for hire.
k. Directing and supervising the work of assigned personnel and manages personnel issues and concerns.
Assuming responsibility for the operation of the school in the absence of the Principal.
l. Responding appropriately to concerns and issues from staff, students, and families. Assisting in fostering
and modeling good interpersonal relations among staff, students and families.
2.Provides instructional leadership staff supervision evaluation by:
a. Maintaining, under the leadership of the Principal and in conjunction with the Executive Director of Learning
and other school administrators, a cohesive PK-12 educational plan consistent with the District Ends policy
and the Vermont Agency of Education.
b. Coordinating with the Principal to ensure a regular review and revision of school curricula. Leading
assigned district-approved, building-level improvements of the educational program.
c. Coordinating with Guidance staff to ensure accurate completion of school attendance register, grade
reports, and all end of the year reports.
d. Actively working with teachers to improve instructional skills and other areas of competence through
frequent clinical observation, instructional conferencing, faculty meetings, and other means.
e. Assisting in developing performance improvement plans and/or professional non-renewal or dismissal
processes in consultation with the Principal.
3.Provides student services and support by:
a. Interacting with students in a constructive manner and conveying expected behavior. Upholds discipline as
necessary, according to due process rights of students and in keeping with school behavior management
programs.
b. Working to maintain good attendance on the part of pupils.
4.General Responsibilities
a. Assisting in establishing and maintaining favorable relationships with local community groups and
individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs.
b. Leading district-wide activities, in-service programs, and committees as appropriate.
c. Performing other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent,
Principal, or their designee which will assist them in providing services to the school district.
d. Remaining current on educational/school administration issues with which appropriate licensure may be
maintained.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Assists with the supervision and evaluation of staff. Responsibilities may include
interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance;
rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Is responsible for the overall
direction, coordination, and evaluation of the school when the Principal is absent from the building. Carries out
supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's rules, policies, and applicable laws. Regular
attendance in accordance with the established work schedule is required.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability

functions. Education and/or Experience: Master's Degree in school administration, education, curriculum, or related to
elementary education. A minimum 5 years teaching and/or administrative experience preferably at the elementary
school level. Knowledge and skills in the areas of program and instructional evaluation is required. Demonstrated
experience in leadership, planning, budgeting and organizational abilities. Knowledge of current research,
philosophy and practice. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate
and acceptable
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Teaching Certificate in PK-6, or Special Education, Administrative
endorsement (eligible)
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret information from professional journals, financial reports,
government regulations, legal documents, testing and assessment data. Ability to write reports, professional
correspondence, presentations, and procedure manuals in a generally accepted style and format. The ability to
communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form is required.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets preferred. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to
interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several
abstract and concrete variables. Other Skills and Abilities: Personal computer, word processing, database, internet, and spreadsheet skills. Ability
to apply knowledge of current education research and theory. Demonstrated success in administrative planning,
program development, utilization and modification of resources is preferred. A demonstrated ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community is essential. Ability to perform
duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies are also required. Demonstrated
ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service is essential.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to remain stationary, and at times move
to different locations, talk, see, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach for items and to operate

and others. The employee must occasionally move items up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this
job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Emotional Demands: The individual must be able to demonstrate resilience and successfully manage stressful
conditions and interactions with others, such as but not limited to, developmentally challenged students and
persons who are emotionally distraught. The individual must be able to work with others in a collegial and
cooperative manner, and follow directions of school leadership. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an

during any part of the day. The work is primarily performed indoors in an office or classroom environment and

meet strict deadlines. Interaction with others is required. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work
irregular or extended hours, direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, or work output of other people.
Terms of Employment: Length of contract year as established by the board. Salary and other conditions of
employment as established by the agreement between the South Burlington Administrators' Association and the
South Burlington Board of School Directors.
