Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Assistant Editor/Word Processor I for immediate employment for the Honolulu, HI office. Come experience the field of technical communications firsthand by learning the ins and outs of technical writing and editing through the lens of the environmental sciences world. You will work in an intellectually motivating atmosphere that offers countless opportunities for strong performers. As a Word Processor, you will use your:

  • Keen attention to detail to format technical reports, check acronyms, and verify references.

  • Flexible attitude to produce paper copies and CDs of technical reports.

Our fast-paced environment will keep you on your toes, so the ability to work in a high-pressure, deadline driven environment is a must.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and manage projects to ensure deadlines are met. Communicate priorities and scheduling conflicts to Managing Editor and Project Manager.

  • Format reports by:

  • Applying template styles to text and tables.

  • Captioning figures, tables, and appendixes, and photographs and inserting cross-references.

  • Verify acronyms and references by:

  • Ensuring acronyms are spelled out only on first occurrence and that they are correctly defined in the document's acronym list.

  • Verifying that references are correctly cited in text and in the reference list. Researching missing references using the Master Reference list or asking the authoring team to provide the document information.

  • Correcting minor grammatical/spelling errors.

  • Store all project files systematically based on electronic files storage guidelines.

  • Maintain one or more of the following internal reference documents:

  • Master acronym list

  • Reference list

  • Custom dictionary

  • Advance personal knowledge and team processes by:

  • Participating in process improvement meetings.

  • Helping to implement process improvement ideas or refining current processes.

Reading periodicals or journals (Intercom, Technical Communicator, etc.).

Minimum Requirements

  • Strong writing skills (evaluated based on writing sample and/or writing test)

  • Proficient Microsoft Word skills (evaluated based on writing sample)

  • Strong organization and time management skills

  • Comfortable with technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Technical Communications, or related fields

  • Ability to adapt to change (flexible)

  • Can work in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment
